Monthly UP walking tour and meetup!

I'm starting a new group for this, and would love for it to replace the UP Meetup Thread as a pinned item. 

The purpose of this group is to bring people together to talk development, transportation, urban planning and community building. Each event will include a "Janes Walk" around an urban neighborhood in Charlotte, and either start with or finish with (or both) a cold beverage. This will give us an opportunity to talk about what's changing in Charlotte, and why. What we can improve in Charlotte, and how. I cannot wait to see you guys!

I think this is great idea to do walking tours too.  In the future I can lead one in downtown Concord or over in Belmont or Mt Holly too.  So many neighborhoods in Charlotte to do this:  FreeMore, the Freight district, Southend, Gold district,  Plaza Midwood, NoDa etc.  Even a tour of Camp North End as it is huge!

Thanks to all who came out for inaugural walking tour UP meetup.  This will be the new format going forward it is great to see things in progress and talk and walk.  Thanks for @CLT Developmentand the @TheRealClaytonand his other 10 aliases for leading the tour.  It was lightly raining at 1 pm so we stayed about 30 minutes at the Starlight then began walking and talking when the clouds parted.  We walked up N Brevard from the Joinery (and 350 apartments will be built around this recently opened apartment building by the same developer) then up to 25th St across the creek on the new bridge to an exclusive developer led tour of Lintmens.    What a great project!  Food hall with 12 stalls in historic  knitting mill. Huge Seoul Food and then across the XCLT Little Sugar Creek greenway trail is the food hall (see attached photos) This portion of the XCLT trail and greenway is actually an old rail line the city acquired.   There will be even a pedestrian bridge over the greenway trail to one side of the project.  Lots of outside dining areas,   (thanks Paul for the tour of your project!)

Then the tour continued northward to heart of NoDa and we talked about the proposals for the Johnston YMCA there.  (very exciting development will happen here) The walking tour ended at Amelies and near the LYNX station.  Some of us decided to just walk back from there.  

Going forward with UP meetups they will be walk and talk oriented with exclusive tours of places (and I am hearing about a tour led by Camp North End folks could be in the works)  Other tours monthly will be uptown, Southend, LoSo, even the ring cities like downtown Concord Gastonia and yes even Pineville with a walk on the one of the best stretches of greenway in Meck and their revitalized downtown.

https://www.lintmens.com/    This will be a FANTASTIC project for the neighborhood and greater city.   Very excited  about this new stretch of the Cross Charlotte Trail XCLT. 

Never did meet this Jane of Jane's Walk fame.      This was such a good tour this will be a repeat tour in the next 6-7 months I predict.

Hey UP Fam! So the next meet up will be our first weekday event. On June 8th at 6pm I've arranged a tour of Camp North End from Damon Hemmerdinger the placemaker-in-chief and owner/developer of Camp North End. We will get to hear from the visionary himself about the past, present and future of the 76 acre property! I'll send a invitation in the next few days, but I wanted to make sure ya'll SAVE THE DATE!

 

If we get this popular enough, I'll work to get us a hardhat tour of Duke Energy Plaza, the Line or somewhere else awesome.

I live in Miami but I am visiting family that live in Charlotte around the end of June/beginning of July.  I dont know if a walk is scheduled then

absolutely I meant to put this out in other very active UP forums.   Not sure if the Pineville greenway tour is next or the downtown Concord small town urbanism tour.

Will try to attend tomorrow's Camp North End meeting.  Anyone know if we're required to wear long pants?  I'd prefer to wear shorts, but I know parts of the area are active construction sites.

Don't know about that but we may be in and out of buildings so I would err on the side of jeans or long pants.

I'll be coming from work so I'll be in long pants, but good idea, I'll pack something to change into that's cooler. I would think shorts are fine though. I think we are going to mostly walk around the property, maybe inside a few of the warehouses and around Keswick. He's going to talk about the history, answer questions about the past, present and future, etc.

Really bummed I'm gonna miss this! Have to teach a class at the climbing gym tonight. Just did my daily walk around Campnorthend and there are so many neat details coming together everywhere you look!
