downtown Concord was hopping today with the 94th annual Christmas Parade all ready to go and people were camping out on the streets and partying in their lawns up and down Union St.   Yes great tour group through NC's 10th largest city Concord.  And there are things Charlotte can learn from its little neighbor Concord.

The name Concord means with harmony. This name was chosen after a lengthy dispute between the German Lutherans and Scotch-Irish Presbyterians over where the county seat should be located. (per wiki)

I definitely agree, Charlotte has a great local case study that I feel is a great model!

Here is an idea we all thought Charlotte could learn from Concord space for pop up retail shops anyone know where there is some vacant uptown retail space?

1876 Courthouse Cabarrus County with their new one that will open next year will have a collection of 3 courthouses all being used for something. 

Future tours will be back to Kannapolis,  Belmont Mt Holly etc.

Mark your calendars for Feb. 18 2023  3rd Saturday for this walking tour.

Charlotte's Hidden Uptown History Tour and we will see what IS historical and IS still standing.  Hint there is more than you think and we won't dwell on what was torn down as that is a 12 hour 2 day tour

You won't want to miss this tour for sure with a Charlotte native.    All 4 uptown wards will be visited.

The Charlotte uptown Hidden history walking tour (some is hiding in plain sight) will be at 10 am Saturday Feb. 18 starting at the 7th Street LYNX station.  It covers at least 30 sites and covers at least 38 blocks spanning all 4 wards.   Don't worry I hear uptown has a  place or two for a drink or coffee if you like.  The tour guide also knows the best restrooms uptown if needed.    This is the what is still standing tour as noted above vs.  the what is lost tour would be so many days no one would want to do it.    Charlotte native or new to town you will learn something guaranteed.

THIS SATURDAY starts at 10 am the 7th Street Station closer to 7th St across from the WFAE old Google Fiber building.  I guarantee you will learn something new about uptown Charlotte history.   Weather forecast is  winter cold and sunny.  (Ideal for a brisk walk)   But don't worry we will be moving 38 plus blocks and 30 plus stops all 4 of Charlotte's original wards..  Grab a coffee and join the tour.  Uptown Charlotte's Hidden History.

Y'all missed a good tour.  28 people were there.  We learned where the first hospital was located and still stands (not as a hospital for course),  Charlotte's first medical school was located (and hint it was not Wake Forest), what church was built by its members on weekends and evenings,  how the the Junior League of Charlotte saved Fourth Ward,  how women lead the effort to relocate the US Mint from uptown Charlotte to Eastover and where the only French Chateauesque style home in Charlotte is located.    (Oh yeah where one of the biggest houses of prostitution was located and where Dusty the friendly ghost lives)  Lot of history was lost in uptown for sure but there is still a lot to see if you know where it is.   First photo by me rest by @QCxpat

I hear nothing about Junior League for looong time. My household historian says 4th Ward was a major project as mentioned above. JL was instrumental in creation of TAPS, the teen parent school to address health and education for (very) young mothers and moms to be. Florence Crittenton home also was a focus. My neighbor 20 years past was a JL member. The JL club house is adjacent to the Freedom Park tennis courts. I wish them well and miss their activism.
Members were 35 and younger thus the “junior” appellation. It was assumed that after 35 members would transfer their energies to schools, social and business clubs, and other endeavors.

I miss them. Anyone have more current info?

the Junior League is still very active in Charlotte with different endeavors now.   Here is their website  https://www.jlcharlotte.org/

One can say Fourth Ward of today might have not happened with some forward thinking ladies of the Junior League.    (also women organized the movement of the US Mint from West Trade to Eastover too)    Its the men who want to pave over paradise and put up a parking lot LOL.

50 people, over 8300 steps,  > 3.5 miles and about 3 hours.  But everyone learned a lot including me on some of these upcoming projects.  From Amelies on 36th St down to 22nd St and back.

A new to Charlotte guy with this company was on the NoDa tour today.

Next walking tour in conjunction with the Charlotte Urbanist will be Saturday April 15 at 3.45 pm starting at the Kannapolis Amtrak Station.  Some will be riding up on the Amtrak to Ktown

If you want to drive just park at the Amtrak station in Kannapolis free parking or on the streets nearby and tour downtown Kannapolis and the NC Research Campus and if you like experience what a NC social district is like.  

3.45 pm Kannapolis Amtrak station Saturday April 15 Plenty of places to eat or drink in downtown too.   We will meet at the platform and start the tour once the train arrives.    Tour should be about 1 hour

Kannapolis tour coming Saturday April 15th at 345 when the amtrak pulls in from Charlotte.  Tour will start at Amtrak station platform and be approximately 1 hour and use of the social district is welcome.   And what really goes on in the NC Research Campus and you might be surprised to learn a few things.  Ride the train from Charlotte or drive and park for free at the parking lot at the Amtrak station.  There are multiple construction projects to see as well.
