A historic racetrack in South Carolina’s Upstate may have run its last lap. Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Easley has been the subject of much chatter in recent weeks both on social media and in private conversations within the racing community.

Some say with certainty it’s been sold — even saying mall developer Simon Properties has bought it. Others say that they heard directly from the owner, Greenville car dealer Kevin Whitaker, that it’s not been sold and he, in fact, is looking for someone to sign a three-year contract to run it.

The only thing known for sure publicly is that no events are listed on the track’s website for the upcoming season that starts in March.

The track’s phone number is answered by a recording of the hours for the Upstate Holiday Light Show, a drive-through event on the grounds of the Upper State Fair adjacent to the track. It ended Dec. 31.

Interesting read indeed. I have often wondered about what might become of that track, how long it will be around, etc. Not being a racing fan, I'm probably not one to have any say, but I do like preserving historic developments if possible. The only time I have ever been there was to go the the lights a few years ago but I drive by it all the time. I would think the right owner could spruce it up and make it into a really nice venue. Could it also be used for outdoor concerts or something?

Well, I thought Cleetus does drag racing? I've seen him at drag racing events. Not sure what he can do with a circle track.

You haven't watched in quite a while then.  He owns a circle track in Bradenton which had been closed down and he been holding events there.  I am not necessary suggesting him, juts someone like him.  https://www.facebook.com/FreedomFactory1/

If it's drag racing I'm all in.

They drag strip is next door but he doesn't own it.  But they do youtuber races with crown vics and burn out comps and drinting and other things are the circle track,
