Richmond in Cranes

[I miss RVA]

Guys - 

I figured I'd start a thread to help us keep track (with some lovely photographs!) of where things stand with tower, mini and crawler cranes over the city - a neat way to look at the city's progress in 2023. @Icetera-- with your permission, I'll happily volunteer to maintain this specific thread since I seem to have cranes on the brain - I'll gladly take on the responsibility of keeping this one moving and current.

If that's acceptable, Ice, to you -- and to everyone -- my only ask would be that folks posting photos of cranes of specific construction sites publish them in the specific threads associated with said construction sites. So for example, when CoStar's tower cranes rise - whoever takes (hopefully LOTS!!) of picture of the CoStar building rising and its cranes - kindly post those pictures in the CoStar thread. I'll republish selected pictures of the cranes here in this thread.  (ALSO -- The base for a new tower crane at the Soda Flats in Scott's has been spotted!) 

By all means - post discussions and replies here as normal with all of our other RVA UP threads. My only ask is that any/all new crane photos be posted in the threads specific to their projects. I'll take care of republishing them here and keeping them organized. I plan to update this thread regularly and keep it arranged and organized by month. 

NOTE: The idea of this thread is not to replace any of our tracker spreadsheets of projects or, more specifically cranes, or their associated tracking maps. Rather, the aim is to create an on-going chronological photographic journal of -- as the title says - "Richmond in Cranes".

With that said - as we head into the second week of the new year - what better way to kick things off than with the cranes that currently are up over the city as we begin 2023. Let's get this party started!!
 

JANUARY 2023

We start 2023 off with FIVE tower cranes up over the city in January, along with one mini crane and two crawler cranes.  Below is the list of the projects currently under construction, sorted by type of crane in use followed by the current RVA Crane Map - and finally, the individual construction sites and their cranes in pictures.

TOWER CRANES

1.) Pinecrest - Parc View - 321 W. Grace Street - Monroe Ward

2.) The Commodore - W. 7th and Hull Street - Manchester

3.) 1508 Belleville Street - Scott's Addition

4.) VCU Technology Operations Center - 707 W. Broad Street

5.) Westminster Canterbury - Westbrook Avenue - Northside

MINI CRANES

1.) Novel Scott's Addition - N. Arthur Ashe Boulevard - Greater Scott's Addition

CRAWLER CRANES

1.) The Bakery Lofts - N. 17th and E. Grace Street - Shockoe Bottom (two pictures)

2.) Silver Hills - 3700 Monument Avenue

Love this idea!  Thanks for putting this together and for maintaining it.  A suggestion would be to put the name of the project either above or below the photo when added to this thread. That would be helpful.  Maybe we can even resurrect our old crane map and add it here as well (remember that?)!

Thanks, @eandsleeand VERY good call on picture names.    I'll tweak up the initial post with labels for each picture.

Thanks, Ice!! Very much appreciated! Really glad we have it as part of the thread. I moved it farther down below the introduction and the project listing. It will lead off the graphic portion of the monthly update with all photos following up underneath it.

QUESTION: What are you using to edit the map? Is it just a static .jpg file that can be updated in something like Paint (if I had Photoshop that would be awesome but ummm... a little outta my price range these days). Is there any spreadsheet or anything attached to it? What's your methodology for updating it?

The red circles - those are projects? Can those be edited out? Let me know how you maintain the map and I can run with it going forward.

I drove by this area in the last few days and don’t recall seeing one and don’t recall a project mentioned, does anyone know what this would be?

There’s one of those smaller red tower cranes at the apartment complex that backs up to 64, between Cox road the the aforementioned hotel

That's okay, though. Doesn't have to be a  big "boom" type tower crane. We're also tracking the red mini-tower cranes - and the shorter crawler cranes, too.

Every crane is fair game to be photographically documented here.

When I noticed the one Cox rd. it did look like a small tower crane, depending on how it was turned, the building, now almost done it looks like, was blocking the base that identified the type. It may be gone, I was by there as well recently and didn’t notice it, but maybe it’s hiding again!

No worries at all, mate. By all means - you just keep on workin' extra hard at that task, my friend!    Now - The Boss - hopefully SHE'S as engaged and onboard with this work as you are!
