2004 - 2000 Population Comparisons by Distance

Sports Talk Radio hosts are morons.  I wont even respond to those clowns.

KRC:  You deny I have been to Providence?  Since you dont know me, I am sure you are equipped to make that statement.  I can tell you that I was in Providence in August, 2001 on a swing through New England and it really wasnt that impressive.  I stayed at the Biltmore downtown (which needed refurbishing and was full of local louts there for a wedding).  Things I liked about Providence:  old historic neighborhoods, state capital building, hills around town.  Things I didnt like:  everyone reminded me of Carla's deadbeat husband from Cheers, downtown was tiny with not much skyline (yes, there were some old school buildings which I liked), the granola, faux-intellectual college kids, and it is generally a small town which appears much smaller than the MSA population of 1.6 million would indicate.  By the way, I did like the mansions in Newport.  Still, it appears that much of the glories of this area were in the past.  New England in general is a declining region, as I stated earlier.  We should have let y'all secede and join Canada in 1812.

I do find it amusing that you come on here and start ripping Jacksonville in a completely inappropriate way in a forum that is not even related to city vs. city bashing and then, when I respond, you get all offended.  To quote Austin Powers:  "You fight like a woman".  The bottom line is Rhode Island is nothing more than a pimple on Florida's ass.  Go away flea.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Sir, you have never been here. Just by your statements I can tell you went to the Providence forum and looked stuff up.

Stop knocking other places to make yourself feel better about yours. It's no way to have a conversation. It makes you look bad. Go back and read your posts. You try to make Jacksonville seem better by trying to knock every other place. Let's see, first there was Charlotte, the we "Yankees" of the North, Providence, Newport, etc., etc. It's a little thin. Also, I have friends in West Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale and they don't think to highly of Jacksonville either. I guess they are one of those pimples too?

Look, I'm not looking for an arguement with you. I'm sorry Jacksonville was seen as a poor choice for the Superbowl. That's not my fault. I'm sure it didn't make civic boosters there feel all warm and fuzzy either. Instead of getting defensive and trying to disrespect other places (which you have never been), why don't you find out why everyone felt that way and work towards making Jacksonville a better place. Isn't that why we're all here?

For example, do you really think allowing people to drink until 4am is what Jacksonville needs? Is that the magic elixur?

If you're not looking for an arguement, be a man and let it go. As far as what you or your friends like about Jax or it successfully hosting the super bowl, despite the naysayers, save it for another thread. Lets stick with the topic at hand, which is population comparisons.

As we like to say here in the South... AMEN! :D

I appreciate your efforts Viper - interesting, though I will suggest that zip codes don't provide the best manner of calculating the area due to their larger size. But beyond census block, even block groups have their limitations as well.

I am curious though, could you advise me how you determined the population? I used 30312 zip code for Atlanta & entered 2 miles & I got a population of 45102.

In a minute I'll post population figures based on census blocks...

Something I had done earlier:

Here is a slight update, take this data with a grain of salt. Before I used block group data - which are census boundaries that make accurate measurements difficult, though better than census tract.

Indicating growth rate by 10 year census period.

30301 is supposedly Atl's most central zip code. It's possible that it's located more in the business districts with far less residential. I tested it with your zip code and aside from the 2 mile figure, it didn't change all that much.

EDIT:

Nice figures. Any way to get a 2000 - 2003 Change? I know some of those cities have done complete 180's in some of those tracts.

Of course I don't mean to criticize your figures & though I'm not positive where 30301 is, based on the other zip codes that it brings up - they are all in the extreme southeast section of the city. You could also consider using 30303, but the zip code I used was the zip code of Atlanta's primary City Hall. So, beyond being in not neccessarily a business section - but an industrial section 5+ miles from downtown - it makes sense it lacks a residential population.

Census block data is only available every 10 years - block group & tract is updated by private firms on an estimated basis.

Additionally - Jacksonville FL's City Hall zip code is - I believe - 32202, which would mean the 2 mile zip code population is 32930. Charlotte's 21350 population seems to be correct, based on the zip code 28202, which again is the city hall. You may wish to verify the other zip codes...

You're right. I apologize. I must admit that the evil side of me enjoys playing devil's advocate with some.
