I've always thought of NYC and NJ's cities-namely Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Camden; as being the most racially diverse. I'm surprised and probly shouldn't be, to see LA and Long Beach, etc. way up there too.

Any thoughts on racial diversity and the health of a city? I read once in a book by Alex Marshall that one of the reasons for Portland's urbanizing success was its lack of a significant minority and overall white homogeneity- leaving no reason for "white flight" to outlying suburbs. Although I personally prefer a city with all types of peoples, racially and ethnically, I was wondering if anyone else agreed with him. My counterexample to his thought is of course to just look at NYC, it's a major melting pot and could be considered the most successful urban area in the US as far as maintaining density and supporting mass transit.

Interesting list. I'm in the camp that says "the more the merrier". I don't know that we can find a correlation between diversity and the health of a city except to say that immigration of all kinds is generally good for a city. This is of course excepting to say the mass immigration patterns that can overwhel a city such as Miami during Mariel or New York during the potato famine. I would argue that in the long term though these are usually good for a city as well.

I'd like to see a map of the integration of these cities- do people live in the same neighborhoods or are there enclaves of specific ethnic and races. Some cities have good numbers on the surface, but do economic and other factors isolate and segregate in your city?
