The Talk Business blog, today, highlights three potential industrial announcements for the Little Rock Port area. As mentioned in the Little Rock Airport thread, one of those projects is the Welspun Pipe plant, which could mean an investment of up to $80 million and 225-250 jobs. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette made this project sound like one with great potential for expansion in the coming years. The way both sources write, this one seems to be a certainty.

Another seemingly certain project is a facility for Boyd Metals, a Ft Smith-based sheet metal fabrication and transportation company. It would employ between 45 and 50 people.

Finally, an announcement could be made, soon, concerning the major windmill blade manufacturing company that has been rumored for months. The Arkansas legislature did pass a major economic incentive package to try and lure the company to the Port. The package requires that the company establish a presence in Arkansas by year

It was announced that Welspun would a $100 million pipe making facility that would employ 300 people. The interesting thing was that they purchased enough land to build two more facilities if everything goes well with the first.

I know the Talk Business blog mentioned that the average salary would be $25,000, but other sources stated that the average salary was still unknown. That said, Little Rock cannot afford to be choosey about large employers who wish to move here. As much as I love our metro, I realize that we aren

Absolutely. These jobs are for those with high-school education only, or slightly less than that. They don't make the average salary.

This is why Dassault's expansion was such a big deal, they pay extremely well for manufacturing jobs.

Of course we all want more IT, healthcare, and telecom jobs that are paying salaries double that. I'm hoping that cheaper cost of living will draw more of them and that Acxiom's investors will see the advantages in locating jobs here to save money vs California and Chicago and expand further here, maybe even with other companies.

Walgreens is also looking outside of the larger metro areas. They are about to open a store in Monticello.

We stayed in Memphis last night at the Madison downtown. There is a Walgreens across the street. We also noticed that Memphis has a TON of Walgreens. There seems to be one on every corner. It seems like there were 4 or 5 on Poplar St alone and another 4 or 5 on Germantown Parkway alone. That is just two streets in the city.

I wonder if another large chain like CVS will ever enter the LR market?

USA Drug is a big competitor for Walgreen's/CVS in Central Arkansas. CVS could enter the market if they bought USA Drug.

USA Drug's hours are pretty crappy compared to the national chains, they need to step up to compete IMO.

A major remodel of the Regions Bank building was mentioned on the forum, several months back. Today, in a small Arkansas Democrat-Gazette article about the missing bronze Minute Man plaque that once adorned the west side of the building, I read the following:

The sign that can be seen from 430 has been replaced on the Holiday Inn Select with a Crowne Plaza sign. The hotel is to officially open as the Crowne Plaza on August 1.

With the redo of the Holiday Inn Select into a Crowne Plaza, the $20 million + renovation of the Capitol Hotel (who knows when it will reopen again. I drove by it today and most of the windows on the east side were boarded up and it looks like a lot of work needs to be done in the interior), the multimillion dollar renovation of the Holiday Inn Airport ( I don't like the exterior), the recently annouced renovation of the DoubleTree, the new Hampton Inn and Suites downtown and the proposed tower for the Wyndham there is a lot of investment going on in the hotel market in Little Rock.

There will be a press conference on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the state capitol for a major announcement. Governor Mike Beebe and Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola will speak about the project. The word from Roby Brock is that they will announce the windmill blade plant.

Little Rock: $34,485 / 5.2% growth

NW ARK : $28,822 / 3.0% growth

Ft Smith : $27,729 / 5.0% growth

Hot Springs: $28,816

Jonesboro: $26,370

Pine Bluff: $24,695

National average for growth: 5.3%

A few years ago when housing costs were quite a bit higher in LR numbers like that basically meant that LR and NWA had the same cost of living. Now NWA has a higher cost of living than LR and these number mean a big difference in cost of living between the two regions with LR residents making more and getting a lot more for it.

There is some site work occurring at the NW corner of Kanis & Bowman (next to Sam's). Anyone know what it is leading to? A few year's ago, there was some mention of Lowes going in there but nothing ever came of it. I would really welcome it, though.

The Shoppes at Montclaire is further west. The work you are refering to is going to be a Hank's Furniture store....kind of boring.
