I have high hopes for "The Daily" -- looking forward to trying it out this weekend.

It is now open: https://www.bizjournals.com/charlotte/news/2017/12/14/now-open-inside-this-cozy-american-taproom-in.html

That’s the truth. I’m always rooting for the places that are off-Tryon to be successful... I think they have the best chances of feeling like a neighborhood bar/restaurant. The renovations pics from The Daily look great, now comes the in person test... maybe today.

Went to The Daily last night, first for Happy Hour, then friends joined us later for dinner. The space is comfy and nailed the neighborhood bar vibe. The menu was simple, but covered the bases... one fish entree, one steak, one burger, etc. No frills. I had the chicken pot pie, which was perfect for a December night. The real stars, at least last night, were the staff... first my bartender and then my server. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and seemed to embody the “Settle In” vibe they are going for. I was there with Fourth Ward residents and they were super happy with the addition to their neighborhood.

^How's the local beer selection?

Its ok... seems to cover the major ones. I was hoping for more of a rotating beer selection though... they have all the menus printed out with beers on the back so it seems like what is on the menu is there to stay. That being said they do have a decently large selection. hopefully they will switch it up ever few months.

Food is pretty good though I have been there twice and have not had a bad meal yet.

The Waterman is coming to Sedgefield in that 2nd level patio spot by the new Harris Teeter in South End.  https://www.charlottefive.com/the-waterman/

This makes me happy. I’m a fan of Sea Level Uptown (and Rocksalt), and I liked owner Paul Manley’s description of a “Waterman”. As someone who spent most of my life in South Florida... seafood, fishing boats, and saltwater make me nostalgic. It reminds me of hot days, fresh oysters on ice, and a cold beer or oaky Chardonnay.

As Ernest Hemingway wrote, “As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.”

A Florida based upscale biscuit chain is coming to SouthPark and Concord Mills areas.  It sounds like a Holler and Dash but having never heard of it or been to one not quite sure.

I was at their downtown Chattanooga store back around Tgiving. The menu was great and everything had a cultivated air of downhome-corporate-southern-hipsterdoom. Unfortunately the gravy that they covered my biscuit with was  the worst I have ever had -- everything else was good. Might have just been an off morning, but it left some scars.

I don't think I've seen it mentioned yet, but the new Devon & Blakely at BOA Plaza is only open till 4pm?! Thought we were trying to steer away from places like that (hours), esp in such a prime location.

And the vast majority of their locations are closed Saturday and Sunday... not ideal. I’m a huge fan of the Plaza renovation, but the Devon & Blakey spot is seriously hidden. There is little chance our casual Uptown visitor would ever notice it, unless they were on Yelp.

James Beard nominations are out again.

CLT strikes out yet again.

Honestly, other than Kindred I see  few good candidates for a James Beard in Charlotte. There are some very good, but not very creative, chefs, but I don't think that this is deserving of the award. Unfortunately I think we are still stuck in expense-account-steakhouse mode.

Our food scene has certainly improved, but...
