103 apartment units, mixed rates (some below and some market rate) 24k sf of retail and a plaza.

I think this is going to be a great development. The developer is a long time property owner in the downtown area, and largely responsible for the preservation of the old buildings there.

The buildings are proposed as a pair of 3 story buildings with a connecting plaza. The description seems to be respectful of the scale of the existing neighborhood, and having a public plaza space pays homage to the significance of this site to the community, the long time home of the mountain region's farmers market.

The site is at the heart of Asheville's grassroots revitalization. North Lexington Avenue was the only show in town during the decades of decline, holding on with TOPs for shoes, Morrison's General Store, Vincent's Ear, Max & Rosies and countless antique and thrift stores.

The new development and higher rents on the street (and all of downtown for that matter) is pushing out many of the "pioneers" that helped to preserve and reestablish life in downtown.

Gentrification?
