Charlotte's relationship with ESPN Outdoors grew closer Sunday when ESPN announced the city and Lake Wylie would host the new Bassmaster American fishing tournament in July 2006.

Hosting the tournament on Lake Wylie will make the third straight year ESPN's BASS fishing organization will have held events on Charlotte lakes. Wylie was the site of the Bassmaster Classic in 2004; Lake Norman this spring was the site of a Bassmaster Tour event.

Any idea what kind of money this brings in? They plan on holding the weigh-ins at Cricket Arena so there's another use for it.

The 2004 Bassmaster Classic had an economic impact of $20-30 million and was estimated to create $7.5 million in regional and national marketing exposure. The weigh-ins were held at the Coliseum and broadcast on ESPN or ESPN2.

The 2005 Bassmaster Tour stop had an estimated economic impact of $1/2 million for Lake Norman. I think the weigh-ins were held at Blythe Landing.

It sounds like this will be bigger than a regular Bassmaster Tour stop but still just a qualifying tournament for the Classic.
