Well looks like LA will get more skyscrapers finally! 5 50-80 stories towers 20 10-30 towers

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

In all honesty I hope they don't. I would be very concerned 50 floors up and the ground stars shakin'. :o No offense, but even though LA is not the largest kyline, it is still a recognizable one. I think LA is content to stay concrete closer to the ground though.

Besides every time I turn on the news I hear more about what tremor is being felt and where in Southern Cal. Scary if you ask me. Now the questions is "When will the Big One hit. Scientists the world over are fairly certain it is just a matter of time. Hopefully, this does not happen. I like LA for what its worth. B)

Yeah Your Right BUT

State Law Says

-Buildings 4 stories to 90 stories must resist a earthquake 8.5

in 1980's the Transamerican building Fall or had any damage and that what 60 -50 stories tall and that earthquake was a 7.0 -7.5

yeah i love how its skyline looks but a city with 16 million people and growing but we cant build wide we're running out of space thats why LA needs to Expand its downtown

LA will Pass New York City Population in year 2010 (22million people)

California Population is 38 million

2010 (58 million)

Sheesh we should be our own country hahahaha

Yes California has some of the best earthquake building codes in the world (second to Japan maybe). However, there are two main types of earthquakes that can strike California. One causes the ground to move in a side-to-side fashion(by far the most common here and thus what the building codes are tailored for). The other type involves the ground moving up and down. I cannot remember the name of the mid-nineties quake in LA that did so much damage, but it fell into this second catagory. Although it was a relatively mid quake for SoCal, it did a tremendous amount of damage b/c much of the city's infrastructure was not engineered to handle up-and-down shaking. I'm sure building codes have been corrected now...

But yeah, you wouldn't catch me up 80 stories in LA :w00t:

California will not grow by 20 million people in 5 years. That's the most rediculous projection I've ever heard!

California's population is expected to be about 40 million by 2010. That's a far cry from 58 million!

That said, it's nice to hear that LA is building highrises again. I've been following LA's downtown revitalization for some time...Michigan winters are too much for me. Haha.

HAHAHA no

its the truth

the LA metro area over come New York

New York = no space

LA= Space

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I believe it is in 2020 that LA Metro will be larger than NYC metro. Plus, some say the population of California may already be 40 to 45 million because of illegal immigrants.

Wow! Californians sure do put a lot of faith in being number 1 don't they? The truth is, Los Angeles' growth is much less than what it was. It hasn't regained that kind of momentum. New York's growth accelerated. They WERE predicting that LA would pass NY metro in 2000 because they were planning on the same kind of growth in the 90's as they had in the 80's. It didn't happen. Don't think those projections are set in stone... They're not. Los Angeles' growth was less than half what it was in the 80s. New York's growth more than doubled. And what do you mean you SHOULD be a seperate country?? I hope most Americans don't feel like they don't wanna be a part of it anymore...

The fastest growing parts of LA are San Bernadino and Riverside Counties. From 2000 to 2004 4 yr period, LA County grew right at the national average rate of 4.4%, while OC only grew 5%. Meanwhile, the fastest growing part of the New York region is New York. During the 90s the city grew 9% to top 8 million, which was faster than the 6% rate of growth in the city of LA. The Bronx's 4 yr growth rate to 2004 of 3% is not that much lower than LA County's.

Regionally, NY is adding about 100,000 people per year, compared to about 250,000 for LA + Inland Empire. They're still over 3 million apart, so that's about 20 years for LA to catch up. Moreover, SB + Riverside alone have the population of Metro Phoenix and will have to grow into a top 10 metro in their own right for LA to be the #1 metro. But that might be tough to do with the mountains already blocking growth east of SB. Also, it's over 60 miles from downtown LA to Redlands in SB County. At that distance, you can start to make the case for merging NY and Philly.

I just read today that the St. Regis Los Angeles has closed its doors and will be demoilshed for a new condominium tower. Though the building was not architecturally significant, I must say I am surprised that a new 32 story building would be so easily discarded.

Hey good idea! I wish the People's Republic of California WOULD become its own country and spare us all the embarrassment its created for the US as a whole. I.E. Hollywood celebrities, millions of illegals, San Francisco's socialist regime, the porn industry, Nancy Pelosi, Awwwnaald Schwartzeneggar, SAVE TOOKIE!!!!... haha!... take a look at yourselves... IT REALLY IS QUITE ENTERTAINING (and ridiculous)!

On second thought, don't go make your own country. We need you so we can laugh at ourselves every now and then.

That projection does sound way too high.

There are also online petitions for secession of california from the federal government all over the internet. California has the world's 8th largest economy I believe. Of course, succession will never happen.

Concerning the earthquakes, I believe the buildings get faceted with a sort of "swivel joint" at the bottom of the particular building. This allows the gound to slide back and forward underneath the building while the building itself remains stationary making it extremely resistant to earthquakes. Engineers have even gone on record as saying that it would even be safer to be at the top of one of these skyscrapers than it would to be in a 1 or 2 story building.
