How did Mexico City get to be so big, anyways?

nice pics. weird, i always thought mexico city was the largest city in the world. or least for a while it was. what's the largest?

From what i read online, New York is the second largest city in terms of MSA/CMSA with about 23 million people. Mexico City is next with 21 mil., followed by Mumbai and then Sao Paulo both around 19 - 20 mil. Tokyo is still the largest by far with over 33 million people.

Mexico City: City- 10 mil, metro- 28

New York: City- 8 mil, metro- 22 mil

Sao Paulo: City- 10 mil, metro- 18 mil
