The pedestrian bridge looks awesome!

Yeah, that bridge is cool, isn't it? Hopefully, it will be lit up at night so that it can be seen from far away.

I'm not sure that I like the Palm Plaza.  I don't hate it either, though.  It looks a lot like a proposal from a couple years back...same design, different name?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Good memory :) Palm Plaza (formerly known as KUSI Tower) was first proposed a couple of years ago, but somehow I forgot to include it among the projects listed. I guess that means I'm not too crazy about, right?

It looks like a vegas condo tower laugh.gif

More like a Vegas Hotel/Casino...LOL

^^Yeah, I like that hotel design, also. It's suppose to mock the shape of a ship sailing, and looks like it should be in Dubai or something. I wish it were taller, so it would make a bigger impact on the skyline.

Project Updates -

NEW - Kettner and Grape(Little Italy)- Mixed-use/243 Units/Approx. 14 Floors

Another rendering of G Lofts East (aka Lofts @ 707 10th Ave)

Both look pretty good :)

^^it does look like something from malaysia, now that you mention it. We stayed at the Marriott Marina last year, which is right beside this site, as far as I can tell. I think it will be an awesome addition to the sailing ship theme that the convention center does on a low-rise basis.

so. What's your guess on how many of these projects will actually happen? We've been reading over here that the SD housing market is approaching "bubble" status-- or is already there-- any chance all of these awesome-looking buildings making it out of the ground?

^^You're right, the Spinnaker Hotel should compliment the convention center well.

As far as the housing bubble, it hasn't happened yet, but things are definitely slowing down. Perhaps soon, people will be able to afford to buy a home here, which will be a good thing. It's hard to believe that the median price of a home here is over $500,000!!

Here's a construction status list recently posted by someone on another site -

The Grande (North Tower) - almost complete, should be occupied in October. Look for Bayview to get going soon on the site just north.

655 Broadway - basically complete with the first tenants starting to move in. The retail base & lobby should be done Oct - Nov.

Electra - Construction is back up to street level, and the existing power plant facade is shored up along its entire length. This one should rise quickly once construction reaches the height of the existing facade - probably Jan - Feb.

Sapphire - the site has been cleared and construction should begin by the end of the year.

The Elle - nothing yet, despite a site posted calling for ground-breaking in Spring '05.

Vantage Pointe - Vantage Pointe, the poster-child of poor CM. Although construction (including site demolition) has been going on for nearly a year now, excavation is only about 2 levels down. Summer '08 now seems optimistic.

Smart Corner - still a huge hole - probably 6 or 7 levels down full site. I can't imagine this one's on schedule either (Spring '07).

11th & B - demolition has begun of the old Chevron station - excavation should begin early next year.

Cortez Blu - topped out, should open early next year.

Aria - still nothing. It was originally planned to break ground in April and I haven't heard anything about it lately.

Diamond Terrace - complete.

M2i - nearly complete, first tenants should be moving in Dec - Jan.

Metrome - also nearly done. Should open Jan - Feb.

Element - up to about the 4th floor.

Market Street Village - still doing site work. Although planned to open late '06, it will probably be more like Spring '07.

Alta - almost back up to street level.

Park Terrace - up to about the 3rd floor.

The Mark - mostly back up to street level. The tower core is about 2 levels up.

Farenheit - topped out. Should open late Spring - early Summer '06.

Library Tower - site has been cleared. No word yet on the next phase of construction.

DiamondView Tower - Already 2 levels down even though it has to contend with shoring up the adjacent Candy Factory building. Looks to be right on schedule for baseball season '07.

ICON - almost back up to street level. Also agonizingly slow.

Main Library - nothing. Last I heard funding was in place - keeping my fingers crossed that Ms. Frye does not pull the plug on the library if she wins in November.

The Legend - excavation is finally underway. About 2 levels down.

Gaslamp CitySquare Phase 2 - topped out. Should open early '06.

Trellis - complete.

Marriott Renaissance - sadly, under construction. I can't believe the lack of coverage (both here and on the local news) of the demolition of the Gran Havana.

Hard Rock Hotel - excavation is under way. Completion is probably late '06 / early '07.

Pinnacle Tower - topped out

As you can see, a majority of the projects that I've listed have already begun construction or are close topping out, and a new batch of projects are scheduled to break ground within 6 months. The last time I was downtown, I counted about 10 cranes in the air, which is pretty amazing.

it's hard to lose an institution like that. looks like it was a cool place-- any chance someone will try to replicate it somewhere close by?

It was a very cool place, and the owner vows to open it back up somewhere else downtown. No word yet on whether he's found a new spot.

Wow, there's definately some good looking things going on in San Diego. Are there any plans to extend the rail system?

They just completed a new extension of the trolley a couple months ago. Segments of it are both elevated and underground. Here are a few pics of it -

The Spinnaker Hotel looks very awesome!

That $1.4 billion ballpark development is incredibly ambitious! I love large master plans that set the pace for growth. B)

Yeah, I'm digging the Spinnaker, too.

Here are some new renderings of the Ballpark Village, and some other projects in the pipelines -

I like the look of this tower :) A rumor is that one of the towers of Ballpark Village might exceed the height limit of 500 feet.

Ok, here's the latest scoop-

I learned that the latest pics of Ballpark Village that I posted, are that of a losing design entered in the design competition of the project. Although they seem to be similar in design, the ones posted earlier are in fact what BV will look like.

Also, the Chula Vista Waterfront project appears to be dead at this time. Apparently, the nimby's decided that the project is not what they want to see in their area. Damn them!

Ballpark Village still needs to get the okay by the city council, and I'm hoping it gets approved. The decision on the matter will take place in about a month.

As for the rumor of a 500+ foot tower, we'll have to see what happens when the final presentation is released to the public. You know I'll be keeping my eyes open for that.
