Council Restores $23.4 million for public safety

City council has restored $23.4 million to the public safety budget.

The move keeps the city from:

- Laying off 182 police officers

- Laying off 73 fire fighters

- Shutting down the homeland security department

In return, the following budget items have been cut:

- $12.5 million from the Risk Management Fund

- The city's $2.57 million subsidy to Detroit City Airport

- $2 million from the 36th District Court subsidy

- Adds $6.3 million to the estimate of collections of the utility users tax
