Architects lined up for Orlando arts center, stadium

The Orlando City Council today OK'd a contract with the main architect for the new performing arts center.

The agreement is between HKS Inc. and the Dr. P. Phillips Performing Arts Center, but the council must approve the deal. The contract will pay HKS a base fee of $4.5 million, with another $4.3 million going to the company's local partner, Baker Barrios architects. Most of the rest will go to subcontractors.

Any doubts this was going to be anything but a mediocre facility - at the very least from an Architectural point of view - have now been removed.

HKS and Baker-Barrios - white meets bread.

Oh well, why should Orlando break with a long-standing tradition of sponsoring bland, unimaginative, and mediocre Architecture now?

gotta agree with you on that.

was there ever any doubt, being that Baker is on, what, the City's architectural review board or something like that?

I dunno, if Orlando had some truly ridiculous Gehry architecture we could end up on Kuntsler's Eyesore of the Month. I'm all for interesting architecture but it's gotta be functional too. And not some of that crap that some seem so enamored with.

James Kuntsler is nothing more than a populist prig and self-aggrandizing attention whore who proves only that taste and culture and ones ability to put up a poorly designed website and spout off at the mouth are neither synonymous nor mutually exclusive.

But because of his rigor-less, sawed-off shotgun approach he does rarely, and usually quite by accident, nick a worthy target; law of averages and all...

I would be happy for anything they design as long as they dont look like NJPAC.

I'd have to agree--having taken the Acela on a quick Boston-Philly business trip yesterday, I noticed NJPAC looking big and isolated from the surrounding environment as we were riding through. For all its troubles, Newark does have a fairly urban fabric to work from and this building could have been much more contextual.

Their new arena however, I like.

That is a little harsh. Admittedly, he's a little coarse, and has a bit of a predilection towards 'doom and gloom'. However, I read him not for his amature critiques of architecture but for his recognition that the supply of fossil fuels won't keep increasing much longer and the fact that means our investment in suburbia might be, as he puts it, 'the greatest misallocation of resources in the world'.

Good point.

Let me clarify by saying that my comments are aimed solely at his amateur Architecture criticism.

Just be careful who you criticize. There are a lot of people who, functional and mechanical issues aside, actually LIKE the Stata center. It has what THEY want - something a bit different, something wacky, something high-brow, and a contrast to the boring brick walls.

All cliches aside, that is. <_<

"A lot" might be an exaggeration--I'm sure there are a few knuckleheads.

Sunshine,

If you've ever actually walked around Newark, you would completely understand the contextual reference to the NJPAC. It's not that bad in person. Promise.

Does anyone have an opinion as to maybe having "The Cordish Co." look at developing the area around the arena similar to what Kansas City is doing with their Power and Light District. I know they did the Baltimore Inner Harbor and also the Hard Rock Casino's here in Florida. They seem to be a major player in some of these cities rejuvenation of their downtowns. It seems like they could do some wonderful things with the Parramore district.

I like both the casino's entertainment and restaurant areas in Tampa and Hollywood. Felt pretty safe because there was adequate security. Even though there seemed to be some homeless people walking around the perimeter of the Tampa parking lot area. I was at the Renaissance hotel at International Plaza in Tampa two weekends ago. It's their version of Mall at Mellenia. They have a great restaurant area connecting the mall and hotel that reminds you of the casino's area's. I didn't feel as safe there though. It wasn't designed very well for security. A lot of corridores and areas where you could be robbed. I didn't feel safe in some areas.

If some sort of entertainment area is built around the new arena, security and perceived safety of the area is going to be very important. With Parramore all around it there's so much opportunity for crime. I hope the arena is being designed with this consideration in mind.

It may be time to start a thread just for the Citrus Bowl.

Rhodes+Brito Architects will begin work on the $175 million, multi-phased project next month. The company will partner with HNTB Sports, a national firm that specializes in stadium renovations.

If you would take the time to read the linked article, you will find that they are going to start the design process. They are not about to start actual renovation.

This link is to the older concept (not by the new architects). If you would take the time to read the post ... this is probably all that was asked for.

From the NYTimes:

"In an interview on CNBC, (Warren) Buffett said his Berkshire Hathaway Inc. holding company has offered a second level of insurance on up to $800 billion in municipal bonds. The reinsurance offer is for bond insurers Ambac Financial Group Inc., MBIA Inc. and Financial Guaranty Insurance Co., known as FGIC."

Full story: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/business/A...amp;oref=slogin

I wonder if this might be helpful for the venues to progress.

This is not in Orlando but in St Pete

Devil Rays stadium for 450 mil

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/mlb_exper...urn=mlb%2C67665

How come this project is under the radar?

Did the people in St Pete not making any objection regarding this thing like the people in Orlando do against the arena? Anybody knows?

and how come Marlin stadium look so much nicer?

Is the rendering of the magic arena final?
