- Bankhead Marketplace, a large 325,000 sqft retail development just off I-20 in Pell City, will break ground on Oct. 27th. The development is expected to have a Home Depot, Cracker Barrell, coffee shops, movie theater, bookstore, restaurants, and maybe another hotel.

Is this going to be another development with a sea of parking located between the highway and the shopping center?

- Gardendale Medical Clinic is set to open this upcoming Tuesday. This hospital will be an asset to Gardendale and northern Jefferson County as a whole.

- Alabaster has approved zoning that would allow for 2 hotels to be built in the city. There are currently no hotels in the city, so this would be a welcome addition.

I always thought Alabaster was a nickname or slang word for Alabama. I didn't know there was an actual city of Alabaster! WoW!

Jeff. County Commissioner Sheila Smoot is proposing a rail transit line from Bessemer to Birmingham. Commissioner Buckalew also supports the proposal. The commuter rail line would make use of currently existing tracks and greatly reduce potential costs. Maybe we can see some action with at least 2 of the 5 commissioners behind it.

-Well... it looks like the dome isnt dead. Hallman has met with UAB President Garrison as well as execs of many other companies (Alabama Power, Wachovia, Alagasco, Amsouth, Regions, etc) to see about corporate sponsorship. Good to see Gov. Riley is behind expanding the BJCC at least. He hasnt expressed great interest in the dome, but if nothing else, we at LEAST need to expand the BJCC.

Several condo projects in hot locations have been announced. A seven story 60 unit condo tower will rise next to 280 between Mtn Brook and Hollywood, at the old PT's /Mexican Lindo/Coffee Shoppe site. Plans call for high dollar units to include doorman, fitness center, pool, grand Foyer, views of botanical gardens and the zoo. Will be some high end retail as well. Cobble stone drive with fountain and coverd retunda in the front will compliment this French/old Mtn Brook design this site will have.

The site behind workplay, with an old 4 story building, will be converted to condos by adding a fifth story, to make way for 35 condos, will include roof top pool, fitness center , retaill on the 1st floor, and a new 2 story retail building next to the old one, really cool industrial design by Cohen.

- Birmingham's famous Tutwiler Hotel has been purchased and there are plans for more than $5M in renovations to the historic hotel.

- New Orleans Confederate Motor Co. (a high-dollar motorcycle designer and manufacturer) has opted to relocate to downtown Birmingham... primarily as a result of the proximity to the world-class Barber Vintage Motorsports Park and Museum.

The new Social security building near the civil rights district of downtown Birmingham broke ground early January. Over a 100 million dollar investment, 570,000 sq ft is said to jump start that area of town, it will house over 2,000 employees. More projects nearby to be announced. SSB will be a GREEN/enviromental friendly building.

I took out the images, but left the links to them. Those were entirely too large. When posting pictures, please make sure that they are an appropriate size. -Spartan

Nice pics, but man, you should have took those into photoshop and cut them in half (at least)! Great find though tedo. This may be the 3D artist coming out in me but they should have modeled those people instead of placing 2D cutouts in the images. The textures aren't up to par either, but that's just me nitpicking. Great pics.

More details on what Bayer properties will do with its last parcel at The Summit. Looks likes it will be used to construct a 15-story, 200ft condo tower. City of Birmingham is currently responding favorably to development. Possible groundbreaking in fall...here is a link to the rest of the article

ONB (Operation New Birmingham) is surprisingly near to meeting its 5 year goals set in 2005!!!

Sought to do some of the following:

Raise 2.25mil

have 2500 new condo/apartment units downtown

increase government deals

expand class A office space downtown

Already, ONB has done at least the following in one year:

raised 2.6mil

1500 new condo/apartments constructed downtown

185mil govt deals (FBI building, ATF/DEA, bldg, SSA bldg).

Here is the rest of the article

One thing I did find intersting was the inability of new downtown office projects to move forward (occupancy is just above 85%). Obviously more parking would help make this a reality. ONB says they have plans for four large office buildings to be built downtown over the next decade. Blazer, others, any specific plans known, or is ONB simply saying this is what they envision?

The 16 story Marx/Brown tower will be renovated into 100 or so condos. A new 6 story parking deck will be added to the old tower. First two floors will be retail with coffee shop, cafe, market and deli, there will also be a bar on the 16th story of the building. An enclosed roof top pool, fitness center/spa will also be on site. Units will range from 75,000 for a studio too 1.2 million for a penthouse. Some units will have terraces and even fireplaces in them.
