Maybe, but Athens gets a free pass in this situation. It's similar to the reason why Detroit doesn't have to worry too much about losing the NAIAS in the near future - regardless of the conditions of Cobo.

Athens had the 2004 games. There is no way that they would get the 2008 games. They are in Beijing.

The only shot Detroit has at the Olympics in my lifetime (hopefully 80 years or so) is a combined bid with Windsor. However, this seems almost impossible, considering the security logistics that would be required.

How bad was Atlanta in 1996 when they hosted the games? It seems they weren't in a better situation then Detroit is now.

I think that would be a good idea. First and foremost, 2016 is a long ways away. I'm certain that Detroit will more than be back on its feet by 2016. Plus, you could utilize a lot of vacant land(depending on how much is there between today and summer of 2016). I don't know if the IOC would go for it; but, it'd be a great asset to Detroit. I'd at least put in a bid for 2016.
