VCU Rams trounced James Madison U yesterday at the Siegel Center.

OK, folks, I'm writing as if I knew what I was talking about shades.gif .

Should fortune smile upon the Rams they could enter the CAA Tournament with a 1st Round Bye. But, if I interpret the story correctly, that's unlikely -- especially since they have to meet the ODU Monarchs on their home court this Saturday.

From today's RTD:

PS: Attendance at Rams basketball games has surpassed 100,000 for this season's 16 home games. This is a first!hi.gif They've averaged about 6,450 per game at The Siegel Center.

PPS: I wonder if our friend Majors from Vegas who always seemed interested still follows our postings about VCU?

Sports meets showbiz -- well, unless you fall asleep watching this video. The opening has some nice shots of the Wurlitzer rising from the pit at The Byrd Theatre while Paul Woody goes on about his WOW awards to a virtually empty theatre.

The VCU Rams have high hopes. The CAA tourney begins today at the downtown Richmond Coliseum.

Check out the slideshow with this story from today's RTD:

Unlike many of you, I like the Coliseum -- always have. It has its problems that are consistent with most aging facilities, but the brick exterior and buttresses give the building a decidedly urban look. A walk around the interior concourse provides exceptional views of surrounding city life.

Hit the pause button in the slideshow and enjoy the opening picture of the arena's interior.

Here's a list of Restaurants within walking distance of The Coliseum which is bounded by Leigh Street on the north, 7th Street on the east, Marshall Street on the south and 5th Street on the west. NOTE: there is no access to the arena via 6th Street from Marshall.

T MILLERS in The Marriott Hotel between 5th and 6th Streets on East Broad. A lively and large sports bar with lots of TV's and a varied American menu. 804/648-2255 (2 blocks.) $$$

GREAT AMERICAN GRILL in the Hilton Garden Inn at 5th and Broad. Typical HGarden Inn restaurant; quiet with good American menu. 804/344-4300 (2 blocks.) $$

GIBSON'S GRILL in the National Theatre at the corner of 7th and Broad. Two levels and can be very lively, especially when there's a concert; unique American menu. 804/644-2637 (2 blocks.) $$

CROAKER'S SPOT in Jackson Ward at 2nd and Leigh Streets. Great seafood (much of it fried) and soul food. 804/421-0560 (3 blocks.) $$

PENNY LANE PUB at 5th and Franklin. Shepherd's Pie, fish and chips and imported beers. 804/780-1682 (4 blocks.) $$

CAPITAL ALE HOUSE on Main between 6th and 7th. Loud, popular with an adjoining Music Hall. Sandwiches, wurst platters and plenty of beer. 804/643-2537 (5 blocks, two of which are an up and down hill via 6th and 7th Streets.) $$

CAFE RUSTICA on Main between 4th and 5th. Very good, small, intimate with many German items on the menu. 804/225-8811 (5 blocks and no hills via 5th Street.) $$

PAVILION CAFE on the second floor of the Downtown Richmond Crown Plaza Hotel on Canal Street between 5th and 7th (the hotel entrance is at the foot of 6th Street.) 804/788-0900. American menu, great views of financial district and the river. 804/788-0900 (a hilly 7 block walk.) $$

LEMAIRE and TJ's, both in The Jefferson Hotel at Adams and West Franklin Streets. Elegant, top-line restaurants with exceptional menus. 804/649-4644 for Lemaire and 804/649-4672 for TJ's. (10 blocks.) $$$

$$ - most entrees under $15

$$$ - most entrees over $15

Go Rams!

Whoops - Hope nobody is in the mood for Croaker's Spot.

Has it closed, or do you just not like it?

On the parking question, here is a list of nearby lots for those attending games:

Had a great time watching this game yesterday. ODU looked strong in the first game though. This will be an interesting matchup, with both teams getting a win against the other on their home courts this season.

ODU beat Towson by 30 yesterday. Out-rebounded them 60-29. But I agree, the VCU game was very, very entertaining. I didn't appreciate you guys chiming in on our O-D-U chant or the We are Monarchs. stop.gif

They announced an attendance of 11,000+ for last night. The WM/Northeastern game was half empty. I think it is because there was only one ticket for the two evening games and everybody left after the VCU/ODU game. I inadvertently got in free for the WM/Northeastern game because there was nobody scanning tickets at my entrance.

I was kind of disappointed to see empty seats all over the Coliseum during the VCU game on Saturday.
