Say what we may about the silly name, The Flying Squirrels are doing quite well at the box office.

Some game-goers were turned away last night as a capacity crowd of 9,560 filled the Diamond. And another sell-out is expected this afternoon.

I don't think they have played to less than 4,000 since opening day last month, and I would venture to guess they have averaged close to 8,000 so far this season.

Former capacity at The Diamond was 12,134 until owners of the double A Eastern League team blocked off 2,574 seats with advertising banners along the top nine rows of the upper deck. When sell-outs occur at the reconfigured ballpark, they cannot open those seats for sale because of contractural agreements with the advertisers.

The Squirrels had two losses in a row at The Diamond Saturday and Sunday.

BUT, they had two wins at the box office. Both games with Altoona were sell-outs.

Altoona calls itself "The Curve." That's because of the famous horseshoe curve west of Altoona on the old Pennsy Railroad which is still in use by freight and Amtrak trains.

I was mistaken when I said in an entry above that The Squirrels may be averaging 8,000 per game. I had based that guess on the fact that they've had several sell-outs and announced crowds of seven and eight thousand attendees on more than one occasion.

The true average to date is 6,309, but even so, the Squirrels lead the double A Eastern League in home attendance.

In fact, the owners are so pleased that they are talking openly about a replacement for The Diamond -- at The Diamond.

Good to see Richmond supporting the new team. Hopefully the momentum keeps going! I wonder how they would build the new stadium on the Diamond's location. It's been a long time since I've been there but I suspect they may be able to do it on the current parking lot if there's a room. This seems to be common practice with a lot of the new ball parks that are build next to an existing one. So long as home place is able to be put in the southwest corner of the stadium (usually required to prevent sun from shining into the batter's face).

dbull75, welcome back to the Richmond forum. I've missed your contributions.

The tiny new Robins Stadium at U of R is scheduled for completion this summer and it will have a pretty large new play-back score board.

Thanks burt. Unfortunately my UP time has been limited lately. I'll try to hop on here more often when I can. I'm sure I can dig up some more sports news to contribute here.

This is more in the category of partying than sports, but "tubing" does involve a bit of white water expertise while riding the rapids in the James. :good:

If you attempt this, wear sneakers and do NOT bring along glass containers

Major Construction at the new University of Richmond Robins Stadium is drawing to a end! This week contractors are testing all components of the stadium to see if they are working correctly! The Spiders will be leaving behind City Stadium in Carytown where they have been playing since 1929!

The gentlemen from San Francisco appear to be sitting in an almost empty Diamond in this video. BUT, the two arrived hours before the game Friday evening which ultimately attracted, 9,300+ fans -- about 200 below capacity.

Speaking of crowd turn-out, last night (Saturday) was the fourth sell-out (9,560) of the season. The Squirrels have attracted almost 28,000 in the last three games and another sell-out is expected today (Sunday.)

The visitors from the west coast have been on a 14-day tour of major and minor league ball parks in the east. Their visit to Richmond's Diamond is the last before their return to SFO.

Note the baseball cap on the guy to the left. The "F" overlapping the "S" is interchangeble with "Flying Squirrels" and "San Francisco."

And here's yet another story about the future of a new ball park for the Double A Eastern League team now playing at The Diamond.

Speculation is that it could be built where the City's motorized fleet is located a couple of football fields distant from the present Diamond. What's more it could be constructed whilst games are still being played in the present stadium.

While Richmond slogs along with not one, but two, indoor semi-pro football teams (The RAIDERS and The REVOLUTION), our neighbor to the southeast has landed a place in the upper minor-league UFL.

The Norfolk team will be the sixth entry in the UFL. Other teams are an unamed city in Florida; Sacramento; Las Vegas; Omaha and Hartford.

Kick off at an un-named college stadium (ODU? NSU?) will be in 2011.

Could Richmond become "an additional potential expansion team" in the United Football League? City of Richmond Stadium, formerly known as U of R Stadium, with 21,000+ vacant seats looms over the junction of I95 and Powhite Pkway? :whistling: .

The Squirrels are doing better at the box office than on the playing field. In one of its rare wins in front of a sold out stadium, they beat the team from Erie adding excitement to the post game July 4th fireworks display.

So far in the season, the team has played to 6 sell-outs (9,500+) at The Diamond and are averaging over 6,000 per game.

Last night and the night before the Flying Squirrels lost to the Bowie Baysocks at The Diamond.

Even so, attendance is top notch. Thursday night was a sell-out, and last night would have been the same except for rain which discouraged some attendees. Despite the early wetness, 7,174 were on hand.

"Youth baseball: Local little league welcomes Japanese visitors with open arms"

Home-field advantage and home-field responsibility walk hand-in-hand in the 16-year-old international baseball series between Richmond Little League and Saitama, Japan.

A team of 20 Japanese youngsters and six accompanying adults will arrive in Richmond today for a whirlwind week of competition, sightseeing and immersion in American culture. More important than playing sound, competitive baseball, said RLL delegation chief Roman Lifson, is making certain that the visitors from Saitama enjoy the experience.

"You have to understand this about the Japanese: They're consummate hosts," Lifson said. "When we're in their care, they will go to any lengths, extraordinary lengths, to make sure that we're comfortable. They put forth a tremendous effort to show us their city and their country and their culture when we played in Japan last year. Obviously, we want to do everything we can to reciprocate."

Saitama, Richmond's sister city in Japan, sits roughly 40 miles north of Tokyo.
