Is this site on the demolished Reynold's South property big enough for two football practice fields?

Great view of the city and nice breezes off the river.

Here we go again! Shockoe Bottom is back in the foreground as a site for a new ball park.

I still like the 17,5 acre Reynolds South property (see photo above.) Would it be large enough?

As of today, Richmond is leading the Eastern League teams in attendance with 265,083, averaging 6,465 per game.

http://www.milb.com/...id=113&sid=l113

As of today, August 9th, 2012, Richmond is still leading the Eastern League in attendance with 347,655. Reading (PA) is second with 343,869.

However, Richmond's average per game (6,208) has dropped by 44 fans behind Reading (6,252.) But Richmond has home games this weekend which should boost its attendance numbers and restore its per game average as top team in the league.

Aaron Williams writes in today's RVANews that VCU's 2012/2013 basketball schedules (in and outside of A-10 League) are awsome.

http://rvanews.com/s...-schedule/64110

Click on the highlighted links at the bottom of Aaron's column. Some of it is in the tweet/twitter format which I have not yet mastered. Some of it discusses the RAM's successful Italian tour.

The A-10 Conference Tournament will be held at The Barclay's Arena in Brooklyn. If VCU qualifies, I'll be able to take a subway to the game(s). :)

Here's the website for the brand new BARCLAYS ARENA in Brooklyn in case you want to plan for the A-10 Tournament. Wouldn't it be neat if both VCU and UR qualified?

The Washington Redskins seem keen on property along West Leigh Street between The Boulevard and Hermitage Road. It is state owned park-like land directly behind The Science Museum of Virginia.

It is one of four sites being studied for the Skin's summer training camp in Richmond. An 8-year contract between the city and the team will begin in 2013.

Nathan Cushing at RVANews provided this NBC12 link:

Looks like Virginia Beach is in serious consideration for an NBA team, with several corporations joining in on a potential arena deal. It wouldn't be too hard a stretch to think that if an NBA team DID move to Virginia Beach, they might play a few of their games in Richmond.

Are the Squirrels jealous of the new popularity and perhaps stolen spotlight on the Redskins 2013 arrival?

Of course not... :P

But Style Weekly points out that the Squirrels can make the best of the training camp and pull in new fans from the Redskins, as well as the Redskins pull in fans from the Squirrels. Sounds like a win-win, right?

However the Flying Squirrels are indeed worried that the city is now focused (and reserving more money) on the Redskins and building their new camp in the city, something that only has been on the radar for about two or three months, instead of helping get RVA a new ballpark, something that has been in the talks for say, four or five years. An honest reason to be worried.

And of course the city is lagging on the idea of a new ballpark because of the counties, and their fantasy that the counties will someday help pitch in to help build a ballpark. <_<

Sadly I can see the squirrels folding up like the Braves while I hate it with a passion I can't see any other sport returning to the Metro Richmond area if the Squirrels fold up and move elsewhere. I just don't see the local governments making any type of progress on this. The reason I say Minor League baseball won't return is because Single A is not by any means feasible for Richmond based on how small all the other markets are for Single A. Richmond would be the new York for Single A Baseball. The only city I can think of that is bigger than us that has Minor League Baseball is Tampa Florida with the Tampa Yankees but they already have an MLB NHL and NFL Team so that is not a relevant comparison by any means since they outshine us as far as with major league sports teams. But it would really sadden me to see the squirrels leave just because I am a die hard baseball fan and would have to travel 2 hours at the very least to see a baseball game which for a city for our size there should be no excuse by any means that we should have no sports teams in this region. In a way its kinda embarrassing when you have a government that is so incompetent to the point that you can't even make a business look attractive from outsiders that want to put a business here in richmond. As far as business goes I am talking about office jobs or anything other than retail it just seems like everything is gonna flop up again and leave and I don't want to see that happen. Sorry for the rant but I just have little hope for any type of sports team in the richmond area for as incompetent as our city government is and how the counties fail to wanna work with anyone but there own jurisdiction.

The City of Richmond and the Redskins have narrowed down the sites between Leigh St. behind the Science Museum and City Stadium. The Redskins are leaning toward the site at Leigh St. Im still wondering where the Mayor is going to pull $10 million in such a short period of time. Plus the 6 month construction time is very short. Hope the city pulls it off.

I'm sorry, but it seems pretty hard to justify spending $10 million for a PRACTICE FACILITY!

I agree with you. Apparently he is trying to get private money to pay for it. The problem I have is promising that it will be built without knowing where the money is coming from. If they screw this up then Richmond will be left with a huge black eye. Plus he already has had 3 months to ask the local Fortune 500 companies and other businesses to chip in. Now he has 2 months left.

Richmond's Flying Squirrels closed out the regular season in The Eastern League yesterday at The Diamond. They were shut out by Akron 7 to 0.

But, for the second time in their three-year tenure with the Eastern League they finished with the highest attendance record.

In 70 games, the team attracted 438,002. Reading was second with 426,623, however their season ended after 67 games. Average attendance per game at Reading was 6,368; in Richmond, it was 6,257.
