I think that another reason for the CAA Tournament move is the condition of the Coliseum.  I really think that Richmond now needs to step it up and see if they can't build a new arena and shoot for landing the A-10 Tournament, or better yet, be on the NCAA circuit for NCAA Tournament basketball games or the ACC Tournament.  Personally, I don't think Richmond has the "umph" or leadership to do that, but Richmond does have the capability.  Bottom line:  Richmond will now choose it destiny...do nothing or stop mopping and get a plan together to build a new arena now (this should be a "wake up" call).  If not, we will continue to see a decline of economic benefits to the city and local area due to the loss of events at the Coliseum.  Under the "do nothing" plan, Richmond will continue to fall behind and Richmond's economy and "sports town" reputation will continue to decline (admittedly, its reputation is not good now, but it won't get any better).  Oddly enough, I don't see anyone in the news talking about this though...especially since the CAA's latest decision.  I'm baffled!

^Given the current commitments and traditions of the A-10 (playing at new Brooklyn Nets arena through 2016 or 2017) and the ACC (HQ'd in NC and usually plays in Greensboro with occasional stops in Charlotte or Atlanta) I doubt either of those leagues could be swayed to a new facility in Richmond or VA Beach for that matter. But there's no reason, with a new facility, that Richmond couldn't host the NCAA tournament again. I'm not sure what impact the potential new arena in VA Beach would have on Richmond getting financing. If they do get the ~$150 from the state towards the costs, then it might be hard to get a significant commitment from the state. They could perhaps partner with VCU to build a new facility. Especially as their basketball program continues to trend upward they will reach a limit as to how much the Siegel Center can be expanded. I don't know all the details but the University of Louisville did something something similar with building their new facility. Granted, they have a larger legacy than VCU when it comes to basketball, but it's a model they could follow. Since Capital One has a lot of ties to the area and are flush with cash, they could perhaps chip in too.

The new (planned) arena in Virginia Beach would accommodate 18,500 and cost about $350 million.

About a year ago, Richmond's Mayor Jones revealed hopes to build a new 15,000-seat coliseum in downtown for $150 million.  Maybe the cost difference is partially because Richmond owns the tract being proposed (roughly bound by Leigh, 9th, Jackson and 11th Streets -- 2 blocks east of the present building.)

Obviously, at $150 Mil Richmond's new arena would not have all the bells and whistles as the one in VB, and its capacity would not attract major league or NCAA Final Four games.

I don't recall where the Mayor proposes finding the funding, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't expect the State to chip in.  Sale of the present site, naming rights, corporate backing and possibly (with a big IF) support from surrounding counties would be sought to supplement city money.

The VCU Rams over The Alabama Tide by 19 points today at The Siegal Center..

Final score:  VCU 73, Alabama 54.

Note:  I'm not a subscriber to CBSSN on Verizon Fios, so I watched the game up here in New York for free on:

Former VCU coach Anthony Grant wasn't the only unhappy man at The Siegel Center yesterday.  The owner of Papa John's had to provide a free pizza to everyone with a ticket when former Ram Jesse Pellot-Rosa hit a half court shot in a pre-game curtain-raiser.

Tonight, another BIG win for the Rams at the sold out Sigel Center:

VCU 76 -- Western Kentucky 44

Saw the game on TV.  The commentators said that if VCU can keep up this level of play and stay healthy, they could see VCU easily making it to the Sweet 16 in March.  That would just be neat!

VCU Rams play Lehigh today at 5PM in The Siegel Center.

The Richmond Forum has sold out 4,200 seats tonight in the Landmark Theatre complex (600 of those seats are in the ballroom beneath the auditorium where the event will be beamed live on a large screen.)  Steven Spielberg and associates will discuss the making of LINCOLN in Richmond at 8PM.

With about 8,000 at VCU and 4,200 at The Landmark, parking in the midtown area is sure to be  problematic.

I'll be watching the game on NBC-Sports (Channel 590 on Verizon Fios.)

Wow, that was a close game. I went, cause I got tickets (which I secured on Black Friday :P :P)

Lehigh really played us close. We ended up beating them, 59-55 (Cause we're the RAMS :D) and their star player, #3 CJ McCollum was benched 15 mins into the game because of some sort of leg injury....

and I bet a nickel the referee was biased :P :P kidding, but all those fouls called on us were no joke.... and the 7500 people packed in there certainly didn't enjoy that either. All in all, though, tough game, and they really are a good team. But we are the Rams, so we ended up winning. Go Rams :)

I, a novice basketball fan, watched the Lehigh/VCU game on NBC-Sports channel last night and had a few heart attacks during the tight game.

This morning, I read a recap by my favorite basketball reporter Aaron Williams of RVANews.  However, some of his phraseology puzzles me, such as his assessment of top performer Darius Theus: i.e,

6PTS; 1 REB; 2AST; 1TO; 1BLK, and 6STL.  I'm guessing they translate to points, rebounds, assists, blocks.  But TO and STL?  Hmmmm.

And the terms 'stripe out' and 'charity stripe' leave me befuddled. :shok:

LOL burt, indeed to some, basketball terminology can be confusing, especially when coming from an online news website :P

I think STL means steals.....

and TO is turnovers!!

And I'm guessing for the stripe out, the fans are requested to wear two different colors to create stripes or some sort of effect with the Stu....

So yeah! It was a very close game, and post game, Shaka I think said that most A-10 games will be like this (after all, it is an premier basketball league/conference)

Uh-oh. Hope we can hang on to that winning streak! ;(

The Rams, who are on a 27-game sellout streak, as well as a 9-game winning streak, are ranked in the top 25 of the USA Today Coaches' Poll :D :D they are 24th. :)

Their 8th straight win, which came last Wednesday in Johnson City, TN, was against East Tennessee State University, where Troy Daniels sank in 11 treys for a career high 33 points, and an Atlantic 10 conference record for amount of treys in a single game. It is also the highest amount of any Division I NCAA player this season. :) Their 9th straight win came from Lehigh, a game at the Stu which I attended.

So, GO RAMS! :)

Virginia is the largest state in the nation that doesn't have a major league sports team.

Mayor Sessoms of Virgina Beach has revealed today that Comcast-Spectacor does not have a firm committment with The Sacramento Kings or any other pro team.  Without it, the city cannot approach the General Assembly in Richmond for financial support.

The Rams win their first game in the A-10.

Final tonight at The Siegel Center:  VCU 74  --  Dayton 62

Plus their winning streak is increased to ten, I think the ninth longest active streak in the country right now. ;) Not to mention the 27 (or is it 8?... :P) sellout streak, the fifth longest active streak :D

In our next game, we will set out of the Stu and travel to St. Bonaventure, where we look to wreak HAVOC and seal our 11th straight victory. Our all time record against the Bonnies, however, is 0-2. So within a few years, we hope to increase that record
