Study to examine rail line between Canton and Marietta

A feasibility study of running commuter rail between Canton and Marietta should be finished before the end of November.

Mayor Cecil Pruett of Canton led the charge on the study, and recruited Cherokee County and its cities, Cobb County and Marietta to kick in a combined $40,000 to pay for it.

Georgia Rail Consultants, a consortium of private companies helping the state come up with a rail plan, is looking at 22 miles of existing rail line stretching between Canton and Marietta. It is owned by the Georgia Northeastern Railroad.

The study will estimate costs to upgrade tracks and crossings to commuter rail standards. It also will estimate ridership and how many railcars and engines would be needed for the service.
