According to the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area is now the 4th largest in the nation. The numbers released earlier this year for the period ending July 2005 show the DFW msa at a population of 5.819 million while the Philadelphia msa at 5.823 million.

However, the chamber says, because the Metroplex gains about 365 new residents every day -- compared to just 72 for Philadelphia -- D-FW overtook the Pennyslvania metro last year and since has pulled well ahead.

D-FW's new position won't be official until July 2007, the chamber said, when the census bureau releases its latest population estimate.

The new Census population estimates that were recently released show that Texas had the highest numeric population gain in the period from July 1, 2005 to July 1, 2006. The population grew by 579,275 which was a 2.5% gain. The states current population now stands at 22,859,968.

Breakdown of the population gain:

-- Natural increase - 235,558

-- International migration - 125,770

-- Domestic migration - 218,745

It is estimated that between 120,000 and 160,000 new residents are in Texas as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

I think some of these numbers you have to take with a grain of salt. The numbers come from the state demographer with is based on a mathematical formula. I offer the following examples...

Abilene and Taylor County lost population according to the 2005 census projections but some experts say the figures can be misleading based on retail and residential growth. The figures put Abilene's estimated population at 114,757 for 2005, down 1,173 people from the official count in 2000. For Taylor County, the figures are 126,555 in 2000, down to 125,039 in 2005. State demographer Steve Murdock is skeptical of the figures. ''The data could have a 3 to 5 percent error, which could account for Abilene's apparent loss of population,'' Murdock said. He did note, however, that 100 of the state's 254 counties apparently are losing population. ''And those 100 counties are mostly in West Texas and on up through the Panhandle,'' Murdock said.

When will Austin's MSA surpass San Antonio's? I personally believe that it is inevitable. Austin isn't far behind to begin with, plus it is growing rapidly.

I don't like how Fort Worth is creeping up on Austin. Why are people moving to that city?

Current Estimates put FTW at 686,850 as of 1-1-07. Page 1... http://www.nctcog.org/ris/demographics/pop...opestimates.pdf

From 2000-2006 FTW has added 152,000 residents. In 06 it added almost 23K

The latest I can find on Austin is its 2005 estimate of 690K according to the US Census Bureau. I'll try and find some 07 numbers but I bet Austin is close to 700,000 if it hasn't already passed that mark. I bet it has. http://www.census.gov/

The gap between FTW and Austin is narrowing though.

With the assumption that the rate of growth remains the same, each MSA (Austin and San Antonio) will have around 3 million people in 2038 (6 million combined). I wonder how this region will be with two MSA's of that size neighboring each other. I hope that both will find more ways to cooperate as well as compete.
