Raleigh's street of, um, what?

Those names relate not just to the terminus of the streets, but to the fact that these places were former NC capitol cities.  New Bern St. was named for our colonial capitol, and we had a "roaming" capitol for many years, with the legislature meeting in New Bern, Fayetteville and Hillsborough in turn.  That's why the streets radiating from the center of the city planned to be NC's new permanent capitol were named that way, and why they should stay that way.

Factoid:  Raleigh is the only state capitol designed and planned for that purpose.

To change the name of Fayetteville St. is to disregard a significant history.

Seems like I learned that same fact in elementary, middle, and high school right here in Raleigh.

The names need to stay the same. This is the new DRA director wanting to make changes just to make changes and it is, well, stupid. You got enough people POed at the cost of mall and then you come in from somewhere else and propose changing the name, especially coming from someone who has lived here a month. Not a good start !!!! We don't need to pay someone a bunch of money to offer suggestions like this. It is junior league. We could have done that on our own. For negative thoughts on Fayetteville ???? All the streets are names for places in NC becuase it is the capital. Would you change Hillsbourgh St to something like Wolfpack Drive ?? No.......Too much history to be trown away. Sorry, but people like the new DRA Director even suggesting something like this means we could be in trouble. Margeret Mullen would never suggest this and never did.
