Richmond's Canal Walk

Ed Slipek has one of his usual astute commentaries in today's Style Weekly. He writes about The Canal Walk, but more specifically, the new foot bridge across the Haxall Canal connecting Tredegar Street to Brown's Island. On the island side of the bridge is a new plaza featuring a simple yet elegant piece of art.

Click both photos in the story to enlarge them.

Side bar: Where there used to be three flag poles at the foot of 5th Street, a fourth one has been added. But, alas, on two visits during May, none of the poles were flying flags or banners of any description.

The restaurateur who started the wildly popular Boathouse @ Rocketts Landing, has leased that 5,700 sq. ft. restaurant space in the Italianate building in the Locks development at the Canal Walk.

The working title? CASA DEL BARCO. Don't speak espanol? In English, it means "boathouse" :D

The reason for this is because people are already familiar with these guys and their work with the Boathouse (Rocketts Landing), which gave them "inspiration" for this name.....

The restaurant is expected to be completed and opened in the fall with the 19 apartments in the Italianate building's upper levels. The remaining portion of the development (154 more residential units) will be completed early next year.

Are they tearing down the building between the Italiante building and Riverfront Towers?

Four of the old buildings on either side of the 11th street bridge are being rehabilitated and will contain residential units (see rendering.) There is an old white building closer to Riverfront Towers and I believe it will also undergo conversion.

Possibly, a new high rise will go up on the southeast corner of 10th and Byrd Streets which is directly across 10th Street from Riverfront East.

Scott Burger has uncovered a dusty old archive which proves that Richmond's canal system could really become one continuous waterway from Great Ship Lock at Pear Street to Maymont .

Contributors here, like Wrldcoupe4, Cadeho and myself have discussed the desireability, feasability and practicallity of connecting the Kanawa and Haxall canals near the North Reynolds property and a continuation via locks around 5th Street to the existing dry canal bed. Canal boats could and SHOULD be able to travel from The Great Ship Lock at Pear Street all the way to Maymont.

Some of our suggestions have been new locks near Virginia Street, through the Reynolds North parking lot and a cut (which exists) through the Flood wall to the Haxall. We even discussed European style boat lifts.

Lo and behold, here comes Scott with an old and discarded plan.

Warning: It's a PDF file. If you open it, go to page 20 to see how the connection could work.

I love some of the renderings and sketches in there. It shows the planning stages of what is today's Canal Walk, and the unfinished vision of tall, multi family residence towers, visitors, tourists, shops and restaurants aligning the sides of the canal. Good find, burt!

The rest of history is still being written, Now, apartments are coming inside the historic buildings, along with a Mexican restaurants. Eventually, the Canal Walk area will also have a new skyscraper (10th and Byrd). Can't wait to see what happens to the Canal Walk in the future!

A new bridge connecting the west end of the power plant with the Lofts at Canal Walk is in the works:

Stairs to connect the north side of the Canal Walk with 11th St. are also in the works as well as terraced steps into the Haxall Canal from the north side of the canal.

Great news!

Someone was bound to swoop it up and Jake Crocker and company announced Wednesday, May 15 that they're going into the old Blackfinn restaurant on the Canal in downtown to Richmond to open the third F.W. Sullivan’s (second in Richmond).

With F.W. Sullivan’s Canal Bar & Grille, Jacobus Rex, LLC hopes to bring their popular Fan concept to the waterfront in Richmond, in the Troutman Sanders tower, directly across the canal from Casa Del Barco.

After some minor interior tweaks, the restaurant is expected to open at the end of June and the menu will be the same as the F.W. Sullivan’s in the Fan.

The restaurant space has private dining rooms, a large patio, deck parking and, of course, water-views.

Blackfinn closed in May 2012 and a sale was rumored to be in the works for something to open last Fall.

F.W. Sullivan’s Canal Bar & Grille will be the fifth restuarant for the restaurant group, which also opened Jorge's Cantina earlier this year.

It's other restaurants are: F.W. Sullivan’s Fan Bar & Grille, Lady N’awlins Cajun Café, Uptown Market & Deli and F.W. Sullivan’s Old Town Bar & Grille in Fredericksburg.
