so Spectrum is financing the entire move? :yahoo:

I think that would make any college look at moving into an area :P, whats even better is it sounds like it wont cost the city anything, we can only gain from this! :yahoo:

This is from the Wood TV article http://woodtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=4781875

Other partners will be needed to complete the project, as a previous report put the overall cost of a medical school as high as $600 million.

I would have to imagine the state will have even a small hand in some of the funding, Michigan State is a State funded institution. Spectrums deal solidifies it, but it's going to take a little bit from the state too. Is Michigan State moving it's human medical college here, or is this tantamount to a new satalite campus? I've never been quite clear on this.

Grand Rapids will be the home of MSU's college of human medicine--significantly more awesome than a satellite campus.

Here's a quote from the Lansing State Journal that sort of sums up the plan:

"Yes, a four-year medical school will arise in Grand Rapids. But MSU's medical schools in East Lansing (human and osteopathic) will remain."

I'm sure there are others, but I found this summary first.

I think it's in the neighborhood of $85 million to move the school, and then $600M for on-going funding through the next 10 years or something? :dontknow: I'd have to go back through the old articles.

so its an estimated $85 million to build the school, and another $600 million to maintain studies there over 10 years, is that a good way to look at it?

Isn't there a surface lot on the north side of Michigan not too far west of the Van Andel Institute? I wonder if this is the lot they are referring to?

That lot is gone

Thanks for the correction GRDad! For some reason I was thinking that lot was still there.

The $600 million figure was probably from the initial report that was released in 2004, known as the Bowersox Report. It included plans to move the entire College of Human Medicine to Grand Rapids, an idea that was very unpopular with Lansing community leaders and hospitals, as well as some faculty, staff, and students. Since then the plan has changed from a relocation to an expansion, and the estimated costs have also decreased. The latest report, known as the Deloitte Report, estimated that "costs for the school would be at about $100 million in addition to the cost of the community investment of $50-100 million in the facility. A significant investment for research of at least $50 million is anticipated."

Based on those numbers, Spectrum's contribution of $85 million is a significant portion of the money needed. In addition, there will probably be more announcements in the next few weeks regarding other partnerships. From yesterday's State News:

"Rappely said it was important to have a long-term support net in place as the school prepares to submit to a new accreditation process. Any time a medical school wants to add more than 10 students, it needs to be reaccredited, Rappley said, adding the college will apply for the new accreditation on May 1. That means the college will need to ink agreements with its other west Michigan partners, including the Van Andel Institute and St. Mary's Health Care, by the beginning of the month, Rappely said."
