thoughts for an urban wedding?

Recommended Posts

My fiance and I love the buildings in Providence and would love to find a location that we could hold a ceremony surrounded by them, either outdoors or on a roof top (avoiding the predictable Westin-Biltmore-Marriott venues). It would be ceremony only, any thoughts or ideas?

The bridal magazines keep telling us to go to Newport, but we love the city, not the ocean.

A great view and photo opportunity for the city skyline is the Benefit Street Roger Williams statue site...small but beautiful but not feasible for seating, for food , etc.

First, congratulations!

The Hotel Providence might be a way to go. I don't think they have roof top facilities, but it's a beautiful place, and you might be able to do a reception at L'Epicureo outside in their terrace.

Any reason you want to avoid the Biltmore? I've been told by people who've rented their upper level party/banquet hall that the view is spectacular and guests spend half the evening just with their jaws dropped looking out the windows at the skyline.

Not quite as urban, but still Providence themed, I knew a couple who also did a wedding ceremony at Roger Williams Park and then the reception at the Lippott House at Hope and Waterman. It was supposedly wonderful, and also very inexpensive.

If Prospect Park could be used, that would be a spectacular idea as well...

Garris and Baines, Thanks for the ideas. I do like the Hotel Providence as well as Prospect Park. I'll have to look into those as possibilities.

Hotel Providence has a second floor terrace overlooking the park on Westminster, The Blackstone Terrace. There are three interconnected function rooms that can be rented out for a wedding in that space. They've had quite a few.

Just my two cents .... are you sure you want an outdoor wedding in Rhode Island?? ;) It rains about 250 days a year. I don't like those odds.

But I want to second Garris' opinions. Don't write off the Biltmore until you've been up there. The views are fantasitc. Also, even though Prospect Park couldn't really be rented for an event, it would be the perfect place for the wedding photos.

If doing photos in Prospect Park, your photographer should bring some supplementary lighting for photos, as it's a Westward exposure, so any time into the afternoon, the sun is facing the park, which could make photos somewhat tricky...

Does anyone know if the Fleet Skating Center (now the Bank of America City Center) can be rented out for private functions? That would be the perfect place for an urban wedding, surrounded by all of the buildings in the financial district.

A ceremony at the ampitheater in Waterplace Park would be pretty cool....

I don't know how urban a reception in the Fleet Skating Center would be... Can you really see much of the city from inside there? Plus, it would be loud... A lot of traffic noise...

Waterplace might be interesting down the road...

True, there might be a noise issue with the skating center. But there's no doubt that you'd be surrounded by beautiful shots of the skyline. Not to mention the company I work for designed the center (before my time here).

searching the forum for wedding ideas... i found this thread. since i'm now engaged, we're in the planning stages, but we're planning 2 years out, so we've got time. one thought we had was this (and it was our first thought, might be expensive though). ceremony at the ampitheatre at waterplace park (you can rent it out, i've asked the parks dept). reception and backup location for the ceremony in the biltmore ballroom on the top floor (why don't newer hotels put their ballrooms on top anymore?).

other ideas involve the hotel viking in newport, the hyatt in newport, roger williams park casino and bandstand, the RI convention center (the room is actually nice looking from pictures and has a relatively decent view, not as good as the biltmore though), the village inn in narragansett... and i'm sure more will be added.

i really like the idea of a "big city" classy wedding. she likes the idea of an oceanside classy wedding. her mom wants us spending as little money as possible "because it's just one day", but i want it to be a truly wonderful experience and a classy one as well. so i checked websites for other hotels in the city, but their ballrooms are all sort of blah (that standard hotel ballroom look). i'll have to look at the hotel providence and see what they've got. i really like the biltmore and the views of the city (especially if it ends up being a waterfire night!), but the biltmore is expensive.

Hotel Providence's ball/meeting rooms are pretty standard, but they have a roof patio that's nice.

their bigger ballroom is actually really nice looking from the pics, not the standard bland hotel ballroom.

They have a groundfloor ballroom which is nice. But I really like the roofdeck, I think it's the Blackstone Terrace??? There are several rooms on the second floor that can be configured together as needed.

yeah, the terrace is the roofdeck. we're planning on late spring, so it might be too cold for that for the whole reception, but cocktail hour out there could be really cool.

I had my high school prom on the top two floors of the Biltmore, that would be a great place for a wedding.

I definitely wish more of the tall buildings had public spaces on the top floors. We need a nice bar/restaurant at the top on 110W or Waterplace. Of course I probably wouldn't be able to afford a dinner there if there was one....

hmmmm... how sweet would it be to have the rehearsal dinner on the top of waterplace and have the reception in the biltmore? one can dream...

i'm currently trying to push the fiancee to agree to the providence wedding at waterplace park... by the time we have our wedding (may 2008), westin 2, waterplace, gtech, the renaissance hotel, and OTW should be complete (or in the case of OTW, nearly complete)... the city will look simply amazing, especially from the waterplace park ampitheatre!!

I'm getting married on September 1, 2007. The ceremony is at the Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul and the reception is at the Biltmore's Grand Ballroom. We're hoping for Waterfire that night being that it is Saturday of Labor Day weekend.

Unfortunately gfecte01 needs to make one more post before he/she can use the PM system (we do that to prevent people from signing up just to spam our members). So go ahead gfecte01, make one more post.

Oh, outstanding idea to aim for a likely Waterfire weekend! I just ran into a couple from Boston who apparently did their wedding several years ago at Waterplace and the Biltmore (complete with gondola rides, etc) and they were gushing that it was "nearly perfect."

Congratulations, and good suggestion!
