Pretty interesting. I wonder how this is going to impact HSR ridership projections. I've taken the buses out of NYC into Boston, Philly, DC, and Montreal for years when travelling for leisure. I've taken the Acela to DC for work assignments, but the price v. time doesn't justify the time difference for me, especially when using the Corporate AMEX. But those are all walkable cities, I'd be curious to see the demographic variation for those that need to drive upon arrival at their final destination in the markets they are serving.

Teresa Jacobs is shaking things up.

Mayor Teresa Jacobs ousts top Orange County staffers

"Jacobs handed fire and jail oversight duties to Deputy Administrator Linda Weinberg, who would also continue to oversee health and family services." Fire, jail, health, and family services? I'll admit, I don't know much about local government, but how does someone with a law degree know enough about these diverse areas to run them successfully?

It's not clear whether this will directly affect Orlando but it's something to keep an eye on:

For the record, the bill states that Orange county would be included with the following counties in District Two: Nassau, Duval, Clay, Putnam, St. Johns, Flagler, Marion, Volusia, Lake, Seminole, Hernando, Polk, and Osceola.

This is a joke, right?

2 Florida Legislators Push Golf Courses for State Parks

They want to put up to five golf courses in our state parks, possibly with hotels. Guess who's behind this one...

====

EDIT: So I guess as soon as the news broke about these new bills, there was so much public outrage that they withdrew them. Find updates here:

SB 1846

HB 1239

Can you imagine if Scott's people got their way, what Florida would look like in four years? Nothing but golf courses, casinos, and parking lots highways.

Orange County is piping methane directly to OUC power plant generators

Very cool that they are doing this. OUC needs to have a program in place and publicized for installing solar panels on roofs of homes. I bet if every home in the city of Orlando had solar panels installed, we could sell electricity through OUC to other regions and actually make money during parts of the year or lower the costs during the hot summer months.

"Tampa Bay's metro area is bigger than Orlando's but created less than one-third as many jobs" - Robert Trigaux, St. Pete Times. He notes most of the new jobs are in the service area, but once again Orlando's leading Florida out of the recession. Beth Kassab has noted in the Sentinel recently that there will be a significant need for better-paying medical jobs thanks to the Lake Nona medical core coming on line.

Orange County is getting its first solar power plant by the end of 2011. (Wtf took so long?)

Planting a Solar Farm

Wonder if it has anything to do with hurricane proofing? The article mentions the panels can be stowed in the event of an approaching tropical storm. Are solar plants common outside of Orange County in the state of Florida?

Seems like a good place for solar power, provided the plants can be protected from hurricanes.

The NYTimes seems to think we're the deal lately:

Homeless, but Finding Sanctuary at School

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/02/education/02winerip.html

It's interesting to note how many "A" rated schools (including Fern Creek, Hillcrest and Howard with incredibly diverse student populations) we have in and around downtown, as well as successful charter and private schools. For years, the knock on downtown living has been that the schools are awful. We generally do not have that problem.

I love the idea of Hillcrest's bilingual program. I don't know much about it, but you can enroll your kid in either English-French, English-Vietnamese, or English-Spanish programs. Pretty awesome for a public school - I can't believe we don't have more of those, especially English-Spanish if Florida.

More on the take from Tampa Bay of Orlando's recovery from the St. Pete Times' business columnist:

If Orlando's moving to economic fast lane, how far behind is Tampa Bay?

http://www.tampabay.com/news/business/economicdevelopment/if-orlandos-moving-to-economic-fast-lane-how-far-behind-is-tampa-bay/1167379

Orlando the new leader of Florida's economy as we emerge from the recession? At least some folks seem to think so.
