Metro Health Village - University of Michigan Health Systems

Is it just me, or does that bridge seem to have a pretty tight arc to it for cars to go over? Is it for pedestrians, or cars?

Edit: never mind, that's the arc of the underside of the bridge.

Personally, I think MDOT could have designed a better bridge...

Site plan was recently approved Gezon Medical Office, a three story 66000+sf medical office building, with groundbreaking expected later this fall.

is this going where metro is now I take it?

I believe it will go out on the new campus. The name has Gezon in it. The new complex is basically on the corner of Bryon Center Ave and Gezon Parkway. I do not know which parcel it will be on though.

If it's going where I think it's going it's a bit east of the hospital on Gezon. When I was out there yesterday Pinnacle had their semi trailer on that spot.

I think you probably are correct. The Planning Commission meeting minutes describe the location as south of Gezon Parkway and 300 feet west of Metro Way, which I believe would put it northeast of the hospital. It sounds pretty impressive, about 75% of the size of the St. Mary's southwest campus.

They've really taken it up a notch with the landscaping in the last few weeks. If I remember, I'll try to get some pics from the upper floors of the landscaping around the building. Also, floors 3, 4, & 5 are coming along very quickly with flooring, fixtures, desks, etc. being put in.

Metro Health Village to announce tenants

A three-story, 65,000-square-foot building connected to the hospital that will house doctors' and hospital offices, along with a clinical laboratory and wound care center.

-- A building that will blend retail space with loft-style residential units near the main entrance to the village. Construction on that building is expected to begin in November. The first 12 residential units, available for sale or lease, are expected to be ready in summer 2007.

-- Work on a separate 12,000-square-foot medical-retail building also is slated to get started in November. That building is to house Village Pharmacy and Kaczmarski Hearing. Other prospective tenants include a durable medical goods supplier and an ophthalmology services provider, according to Granger Group.

Ground is expected to be broken for two additional buildings this fall:

-- One is a 25,000-square-foot office building on the north side of the village. It will serve as new headquarters for Michigan Pain Consultants.

-- Next door, an 80,000-square-foot building is expected to be developed by a consortium of investors, led by Grand Valley Internal Medicine Specialists, with support from Metropolitan Hospitalists Group. That building is to house the hospital's endoscopy service and sleep lab.

Are they still sticking with a walkable "village" concept? Or will these be configured like a traditional office park?

First, I think it's a given that you're going to see sidewalks to all locations. Of course, this doesn't automatically translate into "walkable". My guess is that the central corridor, once you get past the bridge and leading up to the hospital, should be reasonably walkable. Given the size of the entire development, there's no way the whole thing is going to be. The buildings on the perimeter, such as the Starbuck's on the corner, the office buildings on the north side, and the anticipated hotel/daycare on the south side, are not going to be very walkable. I used a sepia filter on the portion of the site plan (image below) that I feel will be reasonably walkable.

(UPDATE: The site plan below is out of date and a newer one is available in the following post)

WOODTV's story is light on text, but has some nice renderings and an updated site plan.

Officials announce plans for Metro Health Village

Unfortunately their renderings/site plan are in PDF format, some of them overly large. I went ahead and converted them to images shown below.

The updated site plan is an improvement over the older version that I posted just before this. Some parking spaces have been replaced by additional buildings.

Your site plan linky not worky francishsu. The Northern end of the development does look better. Here is another situation similar to the Allendale discussion (48th and LMD). I wonder how the facades will be treated on this grouping of buildings? Will they have a "front" facing both Health Drive and Gezon Pkwy?

Check out 3 of the 4 buildings on the left side of that cluster... the entry canopies face the parking lots and not Health Drive

So that begs the question: Will Health Drive be a service alley, with dumpsters and mechanicals lining both sides? Or will they berm it all the way down? Or will they dress up the facades facing Health Drive?

Here is what the Health Drive side of the MOB we did looks like.

The building is the top left one of that cluster, the photo is looking to the west.

There have been some questions about what will happen to the "old" hospital site. In today's Business Journal the last paragraph mentions some of the current thoughts and plans.

"Childress said the old hospital, which is being replaced by the eight-story, $150 million facility in Byron Township, is expected to be torn down and either condominiums or an assisted living center built on the site. A 20,000-square-foot medical building will probably be left standing, Childress said. "

Metropolitan Hospital site to become $75 million retirement home project

I see this was in November of 2006. Has anyone heard of any updates on this?

Yes, I've seen it on the planning commission's agenda a number of times since then (hearing, etc.), but haven't posted any details on it since it was just another step in the approval process (and frankly an uninspiring development IMO)

It's going to be interesting to see how the retail part of the village is going to develop vs. the retail area that's growing rather quickly on the other side of Byron Center. The retail area across Byron Center will soon have 5 restaurants, a coffee shop, organic food store, pharmacy and bank.. types of retail I would expect to see in MHV (which currently only has a coffee shop).

Looks like the hospital construction will be completed around June, with the opening planned for September, according to the latest Wyoming advance:

Opening on the horizon for new Metro Health Hospital

In the meeting minutes for the Parks and Recreation Commission, there was an interesting note hinting that Hyatt may be planning to build a hotel near the Frog Hollow playground.
