I actually had a conversation with a guy at Capitol Places and you could tell that he is frustrated on how quick Main St has progressed. He did not blame or say anything bad about the city, but I got the feeling he was dissapointed on how Main St has been neglected by the city on safety issues (lights) and ecomonic development.

Bethel Cultural Arts Center is not on Main.

Might be better said as perception of safety. He did mention city not replacing burn out lights and not enough lights on Main St.

I made the same comment of there not being enough lights on Main (or the existing lights not being bright enough), but others have disagreed.

Does anyone know if the streetscaping program back in the 70's was part of a larger revitalization effort, or was it simply for aesthetics?

It was more of a security issue. The Main Street area had gotten a bad rep for crime, so they installed these godawful light towers down the center of the street. Dang things were at least 100 feet tall and had those stadium style bulbs. They obliterated the view of the State House from Main.

OK, I remember seeing pictures of those (someone had posted one here a while back); surely one of the worst ideas anyone ever had for Main Street. Thanks for that info.

Looks as if a photo studio is coming to one of the shopfronts in the 1520 Main building, according to the CBJ (as reported in The State). Great news. I hope to hear of more shopfronts landing tenants, especially those that will help generate pedestrian traffic after 5pm.

I think it's already open. I know one of the guys opening this up... super nice dude! I think he does great work, too.

Do the other two shopfronts in 1520 Main have tenants yet? I don't think any of them did last time I was down that way.

Argyle Social Club has some new things up on their website. It looks like it will be really unique... too bad it is so expensive to join. I wish I had an extra $10K burning a hole in my pocket... oh well... I am sure the people who have the money will enjoy it and I will just look through the window

Hey, the opening page has a shot of the original building with the four identical facades; pretty cool. The other two should have never gotten demolished.

It appears they are working insidem but they haven't started on the facade yet.

No I asked a constuction worker the back in March when they had the crane up blocking washington street, they are now aiming for Dec to possibly early 2008, the building is in far worst shape than they thought, and trying to keep up with codes for a historic building are wearing on them.
