Main Street/CBD Developments

Does anyone prefer the angled parking on Main? I think I would've like parallel parking better; the angled parking looks too small townish, plus it makes for narrower sidewalks. If you want to encourage activity on Main, I would think you'd need to provide space so people FEEL comfortable walking. I think Greensboro does a better job in this regard:

Is that Greensboro's Main St.? I've been to Greensboro several times but have never been DT same for Raleigh. It looks similar too Cola's except for the narrow street. So this is what Cola can expect when its all said and done with construction? Doesn't look bad. By the way I like Tampa's Skyline!

^Yes, that's Elm Street in DT Greensboro. Seems that the differences between the two would be parallel parking in Greensboro vs. angled parking in Columbia. I think Greensboro might have the advantage as far as more desirable street-level retail is concerned too, as far as its mian street.

Personally I think Columbia should return the name of Main Street to Richardson Street to be historically correct and to reflect the fact that a lot of downtown retail has shifted to the Vista.

It's a plus for density!! Can't wait until we get a tower taller than South Trust that's not boxy. It will definetly bring out the skyline. I really want to see Columbia start a skyline south of Main St.Were a residential high rise is planned.Though it would be very difficult since much of usc's campus is located there . But it would be nice to stretch the city skyline similar to atl's skyline.

You may have noticed them this time because there are fewer of them! The large trees are being thinned out in the renovation process. For the most part, they're leaving the old trees on corners, and planting palmettos mid-block.

Also, they aren't replacing the twinkling lights that were so beautiful. I really liked the effect of the twinkling, tree-lined street. Gonna miss that. Sigh.

The only trees they took out were scrappy ones and a few that had were diseased due to their age. The twinkling lights would have taken away from the new lantern street lights. And to me the year-round holiday twinkling effect never did cut it.

Maybe the locally-owned newsstand that's already there could fill that niche. I try to purchase reading material there at every chance. I like to support my neighbors in their retailing efforts.

Yes, I do buy at BAM. But I check with the locals first. May cost a bit more, but I think it's worth it.

I agree. We should always support our locally owned businesses whenever possible.
