Louisiana City Skylines

Ah, nice job Richy! It's actually Tulane Stadium, but what you're referring to is the same thing. Tulane Stadium was home to the Green Wave football team for decades, and the New Orleans Saints for nearly a decade before the Superdome was built. The stadium was built on an old sugar plantation, and that's how the Sugar Bowl, which was first played in Tulane Stadium, got its name. The stadium was built in 1924, had a capacity of nearly 81,000, and hosted 3 Super Bowl's. Tulane Stadium was demolished in 1980, and the site which it occupied is now covered with housing complexes, a parking garage, and various other buildings, all owned by Tulane University.

Richy, check's in the mail, but how am I gonna get the beer over there? And thanks for the congrats on post #8,000, I didn't even notice until you let me know.

BTW, if you look at the top left of the first photo of Tulane Stadium I posted, you can see the New Orleans skyline as it looked over 3 decades ago. So yes, this does fit in the "Louisiana Skylines" thread. ;)

Really Nate, thanks for the interesting and impressive history lesson. I did not know all the facts. It's ashame they tore it down; I guess it was just outdated??

My bad, I meant to comment on the skyline in the background. That was the give away and the best part! Very nice view!!! :shades:

Nice find Nate, I had no idea the old Sugar Bowl was that big.

Also, check this out. It's Emporis.com's official skyline ranking system. Nothing under 12 stories taken into account.

Points per Building

12..19 floors = 1 point

20..29 floors = 5 points

30..39 floors = 25 points

40..49 floors = 50 points

50..59 floors = 100 points

60..69 floors = 200 points

70..79 floors = 300 points

80..89 floors = 400 points

90..99 floors = 500 points

100+ floors = 600 points

Hong Kong evidently destroys the competion, coming in at #1 with a skyline score [121,931] that is over 3x higher than that of the #2 spot, held by NYC [36,347]. New Orleans makes the list at #98 with a score of 696.

Here's some other city's skyline score using the Emporis formula compared to Richter scale I used last fall.

Houston........3,632....10.51

Atlanta..........2,334......7.65

Dallas............2,337......7.31

Miami.............2,230......5.83

New Orleans......696......4.18

Memphis...........155......2.19

Baton Rouge......55.......1.31

Shreveport.........39.......1.001

Thanks for the skyline stats bluff2085  I like this kind of stuff. Skylines/high-rises fascinate me for some reason. Very interesting stuff!!!

Some things that "stand-out" on the list: China having 6 out of the top 14 city's making the list. No wonder the $price of steel is so much :shok: They said China was responsible, I see why!

Only 2 of the Top 22 in the U.S.(NYC,Chicago) Toronto was 11th well ahead of Houston at 23rd;(suprisingly)Honolulu at 25th ahead of L.A. 31st; then next was Dallas 37th; Atlanta 38th; Miami 41st; S.F. 42nd; Philly 47th; Seattle 52nd; Boston 55th; Minneapolis 68th; Las Vegas 71st; Denver 72nd; Pittsburgh 75th.

Moscow 17th still ahead of the fastest growing skyline in the world Dubai at 18th.

Baton Rouge and Shreveport have roughly the same amount of high-rises(12+ stories) I think the State Capitol is what helped BR's stats. Shreveport high-rises are placed better for a more dense skyline. BR's tend to be more spread out.

Glad to see Louisiana's premier city New Orleans (98th) make the Top 100 too.

I know, isn't it great! I remember the first skyline I've every really paid attention to was Tampa's on a trip to Florida. It was great, it had such a huge feeling. And then I got to se Mobile as an added bonus. :D

^ Not fair!! :(

Of course Little Rock. I think it's a ringer. Though I love my city and the skyline, everytime I drive through Little Rock, that city's skyline impresses the hell out of me!

By the way, though, I like the way you did that. You did the exact same views, day and night, and then a shot of each city's signature bridge across the river. Very nice! At least if that's not Little Rock's signature bridge, it has a neat look about it anyway.

And the top two photos belong to me, I believe... I know the middle one does at least... makes me proud to see 'em. :)

Height: Little Rock

Density: Shreveport

Overall: Little Rock

I really like Shreveport's skyline, especially its dense core, but the height of Little Rock's skyline pushes it over the top for me.

Not sure how familiar you are with New Orleans' individual skyscrapers, but from that angle Trump will be between Capital One Center and the Sheraton New Orleans, partially blocking Texaco Center. It would be very close to the Sheraton's right side.

Thanks Nate for getting this thread rollin again :good: .....

I really like the Three Rivers area of Pittsburgh. Since viewing UP, Pittsburgh's underated skyline has really grown on me. (actually bumped them ahead of NOLA in the rankings) There is some impressive "tall" buildings(5 over 600'ft.) and nice variety.

However they are NO match compared to Philly. Winning the 400'ft+ match-up 24-15; and a mind boggling 111 over 200'ft. That's one massive skyline + the two tallest iconic skyscrapers look great!!! When complete, the Comcast Tower may bump them ahead of L.A. and even Houston?? Love the shot from the R.R. tracks too!
