Several of the photos on here lately have been really large files. It would be nice if you guys would run some jpg compression on your photos. No real need for a 1024x768 photo to be over 200KB and still look very good on the screen. I am not running a T1 over here.

Thanks!

I use Firefox as my browser, and it automatically condenses images to fit the screen. You then have the option of clicking the picture to open the full-size image in a new window. Perhaps that will help with the loading time on your end...

I do the same, and Firefox does condense the files, so perhaps that might be a solution for you?

I don't think Firefox condense the files. It just reduces the diminsions during the initial views. Also I think Firefox does some precaching which gives the appearance sites are loading quicker but I don't think anything is being compressed file size wise. Initial diminsions yes. Sounds like a technicality but displaying smaller diminsions does not reduce the bandwidth if I'm not mistaken.

It's the site (UrbanPlanet) itself that is condensing the photos to smaller dimensions. They do load much faster in Mozilla/Firefox than they do with IE, though, that's for sure. I suspect Patrick is right - Firefox is probably precaching somehow...or is just doing a much better job of processing the display.

Regardless, I hear ya, Chickenwing. I've been trying to post the Medium-Sized image from flickr for that very reason...I had gotten similar feedback from some of the large ones I had posted (not to mention that the larger ones are more attractive targets for g-man's image theft :P ).

BTW, these are some awesome photos y'all have been posting lately! :wub:

Is there a way to post the smaller image from flickr? The only way I know to do it now is by viewing "All Sizes", and taking the link at the bottom of that page.

Right click the image you want, and when the pop up box appears, select properties, then the element properties box opens. Copy the image location from there and then using the image button in the tool bar here, insert the image location by pasting. make sense?

Yes, it makes sense. I've actually been trying that. I've been getting this message, though: "Sorry, dynamic pages in the %7Boption%7D tags are not allowed". The photo will show up in the preview, but when I hit Add Reply it gives me that.

EDIT: Were you putting the link to the photo page in the %7Boption%7D tag or the link to the actual picture?

I usually link to my photo page, but use the medium or small image as the %7Boption%7D reference:

So I go to the All Sizes page and copy their html to start with:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mbsurf/2352932731/" title="Courtesy of Same @ Smiley's by mbsurf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3219/2352932731_ac50acc2dc.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Courtesy of Same @ Smiley's" /></a>
Then I use UP's buttons: You put the src attribute of the img tag (link to the actual picture on flickr's site) as the URL when you click the UP image button. Highlight your image and click UP's link button. Put the href attribute (link to your photo page)
[url="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mbsurf/2352932731/"][img=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3219/2352932731_ac50acc2dc.jpg][/url]

My apology. I did not realize posting a good sized image would be so unwanted. I don't like the medium size that flickr offers because it is too small. I know many people would not click to see the larger size and therefore miss the detail in the photo.

If you are having trouble posting the smaller sizes, try using the image source url after opening the smaller size page. It should look like this:

That's exactly what I do. I view "All Sizes" and then select the medium-size and post the URL that's at the bottom of the page where it displays. There are subtle differences in the URLs (_o, _b, _m, _t, and _s) in flickr, for example:

Original = http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/235520...cc88cf2c7_o.jpg

Large = http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/235520...8fcc86208_b.jpg

Medium = http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/235520..._38fcc86208.jpg

Small = http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/235520...8fcc86208_m.jpg

Thumbnail = http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/235520...8fcc86208_t.jpg

Square = http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/235520...8fcc86208_s.jpg

As Skyliner said, you can't quite see the same level of detail in a medium or small image that you see in the large. A solution I've used in the past is to wrap the "url= tag around the img= tag in UP and make the smaller image clickable so you can see the larger one. For example:

2355204449_38fcc86208_t.jpg

Click the Thumbnail for a larger size.

Yea - that's essentially the same thing I do. Perhaps the one thing that Photobucket has over flickr is that it provides the img= tags for use in many forums. It'd be nice if UP were to allow you to past the <a href= .... <img ... html stuff straight into the forum post.
