Charlotte Area Tax Rates

^ Union County is in particularly bad shape, though, because it has almost always been a rural county first and foremost. There is no way they could push through the kind of tax increases they will need to handle the growth the county is seeing. The public school system is being flooded with all sorts of problems that CMS is designed to handle, but Union schools aren't. What makes the situation particularly bad is that high-growth, semi-urban areas like Matthews and Weddington are putting a huge strain on infrastructure (water, for example), but the eastern part of the county (Marshville, Wingate, etc.) is in the most desperate economic need.

This goes beyond the tired old urban/suburban arguments and gets into the realm of serious social failure. Union County is moving in a very ugly direction, not directly comparable to any other place I am aware of.
