Recommended Posts

well, these are all very nice pics i took today (on the 7th) while i strolled around town for about two hours. i am terribly sorry for the size, but if you save them, they will look better when you open them from your desktop or "my pictures" folder. enjoy.

Very nice! I see you found your way to the walkway under the bridge. All the shots from South Portland are really top-notch.

What's crazy is that we were out taking pictures on the same day, and apparently around the same time. B)

Give this a try for resizing...

Here's an example of what it will do at 50% of original size

thanks for viewing, and for your patience with the larger photos on the previous post. this is not a repeat of that post...more can be found on the earlier post, but they are so large that i figured i would post some of the better ones resized on this post for convenience...'

comments appreciated.

THE FIRST BUILDING ON THIS POST (THE BROWN ONE): it is just under 150 feet high (about 13-14 floors). and it is shaped like an "L", with each half standing that high. i would have liked to see it built straight up and be like 26-28 stories tall. it would be the same space, just built up rather than out.....this would have saved a lot of that green space up there on the eastern prom too.

a lot of people always say portland cant support a big tall building liek this (over 25 stories) because of lack of demand. well here is a building that proves there is the demand, my question is: how many people would be opposed or for the idea i just put forth (building it straight up instead of like an "L")?

keep in mind it already looks really tall cause it is built on the highest point on the portland peninsula. also, UNUM provident has a really nice long office building hidden in the woods (for those of you who dont know what it looks like, ill post it below.....i would have liked to see this as a high rise down town...it would have been beautiful if someone just tilted it on its side.

thoughts? comments? agreements? disagreements?

would have been perfect designed as a high rise and downtown rather than the woods, in my personal opinion, but this IS maine, afterall....

the building in the second picture down kinda reminds me of hampshire plaza in manchester...which was built two years before 511 Congress Street.

another interesting fact i found out. usually "stories" are 10 feet...thus a 20-story building should be approximately 200feet tall....well hampshire plaza is 79 meters, which is 237 feet tall, meaning it is the better part of 24-"stories" even though it only has 20 "floors". thats why it looks so gigantic.

it is half as tall as 1 federal street and as tall as the metropolitan boston, both in boston.

1 federal street

the metropolitan boston (same height exactly--23 stories)

Very nice! I always like seeing things from new angles.

Congratulations on stumping me with this one...

well i think i know why you might be stumped. it looks like there is a double decker bridge in fron tof the T&T building, or something that doesnt look like it should be there at least. in actuality, imagine yourself in the parking lot from which the second picture on this post was taken (so youre like standing parallell, but behind, congress street, in the back parking lot of the black glass building) and then look right to the left....there is a cumberland avenue parking garage there...sorta right to the right of the portland public market, and this is from where the pic was taken. if still confused lemme know and ill try and do a better job explaining it...i just got in and am a little tipsy, so i hope thi smakes sense....ahahh, i can always edit in teh morningg....

the parking lot where lincoln center was supposed to be built and where portlands next high rise will likely go...best shot of a 20-story is in this parking-lot.

Wooo nice work. Did you just go in and get in the elevator or did you get a pass or have to be escorted?

In a related matter,

When do you go off to college? All of the cool Portland forumers should have a forum meet and go on top of parking garages and tall buildings like Franklin Towers.
