Wooo nice work. Did you just go in and get in the elevator or did you get a pass or have to be escorted?

In a related matter,

When do you go off to college? All of the cool Portland forumers should have a forum meet and go on top of parking garages and tall buildings like Franklin Towers.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

well, 1.) yeah i just waited for someone to let me in (the doors are locked and you usually need a swipe card or key or something) and then i went on my own to the top via elevator...no one gave me a hard time or anything, mostly nice people there)...2.) If I wasn't suspended for five days (for a ridiculous matter in the coffee house forum) then i would have gotten your post earlier, but unfortunately I am back in burlington now, so I have already goneoff to college for the year. well good luck to you and your first year this year corey. Waterview breaks earth tomorrow!

I am not sure about the height in feet or meters, but I know the second tallest in portland is (the Back Bay tower, a 116 unit residential complex built in 1990) officially 15 floors. However, when viewed from the side it is most visible from (the north face of the building) it is really 18 floors, counting three levels of attached parking that slope down the hill. it is the most attractive high rise the city has built in the last 15 years (and maybe the only one, LOL). Then we have the time and temp building, one city center, and portland house, which are all 14 stories if counted from the lowest base of the foundation (portland house is officially 12, and one city is officially 13, but both really have 14, I've counted). Most of the other buildings are 13 stories and under (I think there was a law passed limiting structures to 13 stories for the most part). If lincoln center office tower was built, it would have been 18 stories tall, and a building proposed for the same lot many years ago would have been 27 stories; then there was lincoln square, at 15, 12 and 9 stories, and the addition to the fidelity building at 15 stories (thanks for the info shazbat); all of which were unfortunately never built. and since I'm guessing this question comes from an out of towner, I might as well also mention the humungous twin hotel proposal for the south portland shoreline which would have included two 41-story hotels, a 64,000 person arena/convention center, and a plastic surgery hospital (yeah right, none of this would have ever been allowed in maine, but oh well) and now there is a plan for a 15 story tower on the same plot. Waterview is a new 12-story that began construction this week (downtown luxury condos) and two 10-story hotels are being worked out for final approval.. well that is more than anyone needed to know, I'm sure, but I enjoy spilling out all the info I can think of at once.

How do you guys feel about the height limit that was set?  Do you feel limited by that or do you not want the city to explode like it potentially could?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think it's a fine height limit for most parts of town. The only areas that should go any higher than 13 stories should be the Lincoln Center / Top of the Old Port parking lot and some places along Congress street.

I saw a news report the other night saying that Portland's rental unit vacancy was like 2% or and should be in the 3.5% range or something like that. I wouldn't worry about the city "booming" becuase I don't think there is a great enough demand. But if there was a demand for a bunch of new projects and new tall buildings, the city would be split down the middle with NIMBYs and pro-city people.

That's cool, man, long posts are OK. I was just wondering how you guys felt about that. I'd be pissed if there was a height limit in my city, but some people don't feel that way. Hopefully you guys can get some buildings that will make everyone happy...

There is a height limit in every city its just that Portland has a very low height limit.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

yeah...uh...we should really work on getting that changed. whats scary is that burlington has a VERY low height limit of (i think) 6 floors because of the views of the lake and everything....btw, i got some pics of burlington so look for them soon. none of them are spectacular, but they are worth a view. I'll take better ones some other time.
