Woodside Building

Greenville

Recommended Posts

While looking at some information about Greenville's history recently, I came across the Woodside Building. I had never heard of it, but found out that it was built in 1923, and consisted of 17 floors of office space. Skyscraper Page has a diagram here:

Interestingly enough, it is the only high-rise to be torn down in Greenville (according to Skyscraper Page, anyway). Here is a neat rendition of it from an old Greenville postcard:

It is too bad that it was torn down. I am not sure when it was torn down, or why (other than the fact that it was old and perhaps no longer fit for use). I hope that we will save and refurbish buildings like this in the future, much like we did with the old Poinsett Hotel a few years ago.

I am too young to remember the Woodside Building, but perhaps others here are more familiar with it or can shed some light on this neat building from Greenville's past.

Hmmm, a real nice building. I bet for it's time (1923) it was one of the tallest builings in the Southeast not to mention South Carolina. I would still like to see that building in the skyline with it remodeled.

It was torn down for "modernization" efforts. In its place now stands the Wachovia Building and Plaza. I've always thought it was a sad thing that it was destroyed. Also remember how close the old Poinsett Hotel came to being torn down as well. There were several other nice buildings throughout downtown that also befell the wrecking ball.
