Hwy 64 to the Outer Banks

Just curious if anyone knows when this project will be finished? I went to the OBX this weekend and there is a portion thats finished but its only 5-10miles.

it doesn't look like the section east of columbia, nc, will be finished until after 2012, but west of columbia is under construction... so should be done within a year or two.

Not only US 64 will be widened on the remaining two lane stretches but also US 264 as well. Of course, US 64 will see it all four lanes east of I-95 first before US 264 will.

I was browsing through the NC forum and came across this thread. Out local newpaper here in the Norfolk/Va. Beach area (The Virginian-Pilot) had an article about it in Sunday's edition. I'll be glad when all of it opens - I visit Columbia quite often and that 2 lane US 64 can be treacherous at times.

it is incredible that this project made a 6 hour trip ~3 hours between obx and raleigh. that will really make a big difference.
