Before and After Photos

Pity that the RKO Albee didn't get saved. That would have been a great location for a downtown movie theater now.

Boy does this foto bring back some memories. Like back in the late 70's when a cop was walking down the mall with a bottle of liquor and give my friend and me a swig. I believe it was Christmas Eve. And of course I remember all the department stores which dotted the mall like Grant's ( hence Grant's Block ), Shepard's ( now URI ), Glading's, Peerless and Woolworth's. On Weybosset was the Outlet Co which previously owned Ch 10 which actually had their studios in the store. Former Gov Bruce Sundlun, now a URI teacher, headed the Outlet Co. The Outlet Co is where J&W dorms are now. I remember that the Outlet Co actually had a liquor store inside. And I remember going there as a child to see santa and being scared to death  :D  Providence was the place to shop! Yup, that all ended when they opened up the Warwick & Midland ( now RI ) malls.

Hi Everyone,

wow this is really cool i mean the site generally. how do you load photos? I have a couple nice aerials I recently scanned from the RISD image library. Also, this morning I was running around looking for the Andres Duany "Connecting and Completing Downcity" pamplet (Symposium Books was out but I got someone at Cornish Associates to give one to me) those have some fun before and after photos/watercolors.

one of the ideas they had in the Duany pamphlet was to make the Rialto (hidden on Washington St., I'd never heard of it) into a multiplex using the historic front. It's only two stories I think and the corner is a Chinese food place but supposedly the inside wouldn't need that much work.

Welcome zyounger, here's some instructions on posting photos:

The photo needs to be hosted online, I use Photobucket, but there are other places that offer free online image hosting, Cox Internet service here in Rhode Island actually does if you have highspeed access through them.

Screencaps on that are from the old style of UP, but all the buttons are the same.

Holy massive picture liam!

I've walked by the Rialto tons of times myself and never looked up at it. Supposedly that Dragon 2000 chinese place is pretty good.

Sorry bout that!

I had just copied the URL off of a link on the cinematreasures.org listing for it and didnt realize how enormous it was. Damn IE for resizing it without me noticing!

There is this one guy named Gerald Deluca on Cinematreasures that seems to know more than I can possibly comprehend about old movie theaters in RI. It seems like he has written the majority of the entries for Rhode Island and there is something about pretty much every theater here ever. Really amazing. We should hook him up with artinruins to do some sort of map and history of theaters in providence.

Liam, you can edit the image tag with a width and the height should size automatically in proportion.

Thx J - Despite being pretty geeky, my HTML skills are limited at best.

BTW - Check out the Providence listings on cinematreasures.org. There is one guy named Gerald DeLuca who seems to know an awful lot about old movie theatres in PVD. I bet he could do a great overview for artinruins...

You folks want a kick?

Go to the Providence historical photo archive at:

http://www.quickpix.com/cgi-win/IICGI.exe/sixmonths

... and then search under the keyword "hurricanes." The Providence of the years of the two big previous hurricanes here looks like New Orleans. Amazing stuff. Take a look...

I love your photos....especially on your website....definitely some good stuff!!!

Here's an interesting rendering in 1979 of what they wanted to do with Waterplace park. Orient yourself with the Biltmore on the right and the Industrial Trust tower in the middle.

Prov_1979_p154_1.jpg

I have never been to Providence, and thus I don't really have the best idea of what the city actually looks like...

...but that plan would have made Providence look like a suburban office park, with several low-rise buildings and only a few key towers. And to cap it off there's even several blocks of surface parking in the front!

Some photos I recently got my hands on:

First two are RISDs Homer Hall and The Met. South Hall, which sits in the s-curve on Waterman Street in the front of these images, hasn't been built yet. I'm told South Hall was built sometime in the 80s, so this predates that. This is looking straight through into the current Quad.

This is looking from the Quad, up to the Met. The archway hasn't been built yet and you can see straight through to Nickerson Hall. This one I suppose isn't as interesting for someone who hasn't ever been in the Quad. The RISD Beach woud be behind the photography, a ways down the hill.

This is the one that is probably most interesting to most people. RISDs Market House sits at the center. The current Market Square has trolley tracks running through it and there are trolley tracks on Canal Street. The Courthouse is on the right. The RISD Auditorium is to the left of Market House, this photo was taken shortly after the Auditorium was built, sometime in the late 30s I believe (around when Providence was at its peak population of 250k). At the far left of the photo you can see that the Prov-Wash building which sits today on the block bounded by Washington Place, Canal, Steeple, and North Main, is not there yet. You can also see the building that proceeded RISDs Chace Center behind the Market Square Building. Behind that is RISDs Market House with bell towers on it that are no longer there.

where exactly is this market square? when i hear market square, i think of the weirdo that posted a webcam pic to craigslist's RnR of a market square in finland on a daily basis.

Walking south on the canal, it's just past the RISD Auditorium, directly across North Main from the Chace Center site.

This is one of my favorites..almost unrecognizable now except for the Statehouse and the highway, now hidden!

I believe this is from the website mentioned earlier and was taken when Waterplace Park was proposed in the early 80's (1983 is scratched out on the negative)

You can see the lower part of the building it was taken from at the bottom of the shot - is that the Superman bldg and does anyone here have access to dubplicate it?
