augusta road is a great corridor. i am working on the walgreens at augusta and faris. the future plans for the streetscape along augusta at walgreens and the pizza place look fantastic. it'll cost alot, but if the city wants to pay for it, it will be very pedestrian friendly. if the city could do it all the way up and down the corridor would be an incredible entry corridor into greenville. the only caviat is the cost implications on transforming the existing into the vision.

Business 25 also known as Augusta Road has always been know as Augusta Road to locals. It's even called Augusta Road by the local news people. The odd thing is it says Augusta St. changes into Augusta Road where it forks right before S. Pleasantburg and the othe fork turns into Mauldin Road. If they were going to officially change a street name it would be to Augusta Road because of common use.

Their is also an Augusta Street which is a residential road near the Faris Road intersection.

Yeah, Augusta Road is a strange animal. It has some very nice sections (Lewis Plaza area, the shopping center with Talbots, new Starbucks) as well as some expensive houses a block or two away (McDaniel Avenue, etc.). But I was noticing yesterday that other parts of Augusta look very run down (Dollar General store, as well as several of the retail strip centers). It has potential, but a LOT would have to be done to make it worthwhile.

That Dollar General store used to be a Bi-Lo, one of the last of the neighborhood Bi-Lo's I believe, closed down about 15 years ago. It was a good small store and sat empty for years until Dollar General came in. The Lewis Plaza was the first strip shopping center in Greenville, back in the day, back when Belk was in the organic food store, there was a movie theater in the doctor's office on the corner, Post Office in Salsarita's, Bi-Lo at the front. It used to be a very vibrant plaza.

Augusta Road is an old time Greenville neighborhood. I expect many of the power lines go back 40+ years, if not way before then. It's a very coveted area, and I think the local feel of it adds to the appeal.

I don't know about some of you but Lewis Plaza always reminded me of downtown Hill Valley in the Back to the Future movies (well, the 1950's and non-casino 80's versions). Not the old west version. However downtown Laurens, SC and Abbeville looks a lot like Hill Valley as well. I always got a kick out of that movie because I was reminded of Greenville in several places like the Twin/Lone Pine(s) Mall. reminded me a lot of Haywood Mall.

I recall when there was a Belk's at Lewis Plaza, near the back of the center. It must have closed in the early '90s, but survived for a long time when there were also stores downtown and at McAlister Square, close by. I really think there needs to be another close-in department store or large retailer such as Belk, so perhaps this store was ahead of its time?
