The Austin area will get an IKEA when they open their third Texas store in Round Rock at the southeast corner of I-35 and Chandler Road. The site is across the street from Simon Properties' Round Rock Premium Outlets which broke ground last month. Construction on the IKEA will begin in 2006 and the store is set to open in spring of 2007. The store will feature four model homes, 50 room settings, a supervised childrens play area, and a 250-seat restaurant.

A nearly 22-acre site at I-35 and Chandler Road has been selected for a store with 252,000 square feet that will employ roughly 250 to 300 people, the company said Tuesday. The site will feature 1,100 parking spaces and the "the unique architectural design for which IKEA stores are known worldwide."

Maxwell said Round Rock and IKEA officials are working on an incentives package but would not provide specifics.

"We are working toward some sort of financial assistance from the city, but we're committed nonetheless," Roth said.

IKEA negotiated a deal with Frisco officials in which the company makes infrastructure improvements, including building roads. In return, IKEA gets part of its sales tax revenue back.

Construction on the IKEA in Round Rock is ahead of scheduled and the store should now be opened this fall instead of the originally planned date of spring 2007.

"Due to the significant progress made since breaking ground in March, we are confident remaining construction milestones and the interior build-up process will be completed months ahead of schedule," said Doug Greenholz, IKEA real estate manager."We are focused on maintaining this aggressive schedule and planning for an accelerated build-up."

Large crowds showed up this morning for the opening of the new IKEA in Round Rock.

Dozens camped out overnight and thousands lined up in the blustery winds this morning to be among the first to enter the massive retail store. The doors opened at 9 a.m., and by 9:30 there was still a line of people waiting in front of the store.

The IKEA has been open for a year and a half, and I went to it for the first time about a month ago. Boy, was I disappointed. It's like the furniture isle at a Super Walmart expanded into one very very big warehouse. And the layout is a huge maze that makes you walk around forever trying to find what you are looking for.
