Jonas Federal Courthouse Expansion ( 10 floors / 165 feet) + Historic Renovation

A big part of that Federal Building photographed above in its earlier years was the Charlotte Post Office. The entire rear of the building and the Mint street section was for all central district delivery, outgoing, and special services. This was before the Airport PO with expanded hours was available. On the night of every 15 April there would be a line of cars snaking around the building waiting to drop their IRS returns to a waiting collector at the sidewalk with a rolling bin.

Military recruiters were also in the building.

Probation and Parole and other pre-trial and court services expanded into the PO space when the new(er) PO building was completed

When should we expect to see a rendering for the addition to the courthouse?

RFPs just went out to Architects. I'm sure it'll be a little while.

Where do you get all this information? Tell me your secrets!

Honestly, I'm just a good listener, and have a great memory. :-) Plus there is this.

Architects were selected a few months back.  I'm pretty excited about these choices.

Jenkins Peer is the local architect of record.

Other design architects are:

Robert A.M. Stern (extremely well regarded name)

Ricci Greene (which looks to do a lot judicial projects nationwide)

So with another government spending bill signed as of this morning anyone know the priority of this project for the Feds and timeline?  The current building has been getting a new roof the last 6 weeks.

Between eliminating human rights, increasing health care burdens and general buffoonery, I'd put this way down the list.

Real talk though, I have no clue. Not sure if it's a prioritized project or just happens when it happens.

Do you know a timeline?  Also is it funded through construction or they just design and blueprint and then dust off when funded to build?

Considering it's the Feds, and the Feds are notoriously slow, I wouldn't expect a certain timeline for when the design will be done. As for the design, safety designs are always changing. I would imagine if they use any old plans, they would need to be updated.

The goal is to see dirt moving as early as next summer, but it is a crazy big and complex project with many agencies involved, so the process may extend a bit. It'll still get built out faster than First Ward.

Summer 2018 ?
