The Watering Hole

Grand Rapids Social Diary's "Social Spy" left an interesting Twitter:

heard a boycott may be on the upcoming horizon for an event, since charities were changed due to religious group pressure

Anyone heard anything about this or know what they're talking about?

Check out the Historical Marker Database! This website is awesome! I love the concept.

However, there is a dearth of West Michigan entries. UP photographers, mobilize!!! :) Eridony, this seems right up your alley. You have many historical marker photos?

I noticed today that the maze of ventilation ducts sprouting out the back of the Keeler Building are being removed. No idea if they are being replaced or removed completely. It's interesting to see -something- happening at the Keeler, though.

Looked like there was some equipment inside the hallway today, and saw two elevator/escalator company trucks outside.

So, completely off the wall, but I just noticed another Hot 'N' Now casualty.

The Mt. Pleasant restaurant will be converted to an Oh My Burgers and Fries. I think this is going to just be a local operation... I've never heard of it before.

According to Wikipedia, that only leaves four other Hot 'N' Now's in Michigan.

Was wondering if anyone had any info / suggestions / reviews of any of the fall Halloween / corn maze type stuff in the area. Here are a few I have heard of :

Forest of Fear (Patterson Ave - Caledonia)

Witch's Walk Haunted Corn Maze (Fruit Ridge, NW GR)

The Haunt (Not sure where this is)

The Haunt (Not sure where this is)

It changes a bit from year to year but I've gone a couple times and it's pretty cool. I've only ever done the haunted house part but they really are committed to the ambience and the "actors" do a good job. They even have a dance stage/coreographed zombie dances that keeps you entertained while waiting in line (gets quite busy on Fri & Sat nights). Just watch out as soon as you get there as monsters roam the parking lots and dark corners of the property and love to jump out at you. I'll be going this year, and if you go early & during the week the prices are quite better ($5 off coupons are everywhere).

Last year a singles group (Plenty of Fish, free) had an event at the Witches of New Salem (written up in the Press yesterday). It was great. The haunted forest included a weird storyline and lots of creeps, and special effects. Segue to the haunted maze, embedded with leap-out creeps and a chainsaw-wielding, Jason-masked terrorist. And a hayride.

The proprietors provided an area for us to have a potluck, complete with a picnic shelter, bonfire, port-a-pots. This was near the haunted forest, and at one point a creep character joined us, slinking along our haybale seating and engaging us in discussion. Pretty fun.

I guess the corn maze is "friendly" during the day, and at night the spooks come out. The big pole barn features cider, pumpkins, entertainment, other fun things.

(POF's event happens again Oct 24.)

Waldorf east of walker Ave, south of 3 Mile Road. It's been there several years. In prior years, it was in a building north off Waldorf.

Here's a link to TIME magazine's series on Detroit.

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,...ewsletter-daily

Fascinating stuff. And it inspired coining of the phrase "ruin porn," meaning beautiful images of horrible scenes (such as the theatre-turned-parking deck, the abandoned station).

yeah I read that article, I thought it was fantastic, I thought it was a very objective look at how Detroit fell, not tying it only with the auto industries downsizing. I'm excited to see more that come from the series.

I'm not much of a traveler (only been out of the country once, and that was just to Canada 10 years ago). Looks like the family is going to Egypt next year, and the thought of planning an international vacation to a non-English speaking country is giving me anxiety fits already. Can anybody recommend a good travel agent (not Expedia/Orbitz/etc), preferably one with lots of international work? Muchas gracias. PM is fine....

Last night I met some friends for drinks at a bar here in my Boston neighborhood, and I discovered they serve Founder's Breakfast Stout on draft. I'd noticed Founders at some stores here, but not at a bar, let alone on draft. I wasn't in the mood for stout, but obviously, for hometown pride's sake, I had to order it.

Just thought I'd share.

I've an online acquaintance who lives in Boston and is a big beer nerd and he LOVES Founder's Devil Dancer.

Replacement windows...

Done it? Please PM moi, as I am considering this, and find the sales pitches of the "we do it all" outfits to be a bit wild. Thanks much!

The fact that mustachioed Jack from Jack's Wholesale Windows is now dressed like a cowboy in his Halloween ads didn't help you decide?

Yeah, he appears to be direct from central casting when the call went out for "bulls*it artist"

[DISCLAIMER: My crackerjack legal team requires me to state that "Jack" may in fact be a solid, outstanding citizen of our community, kind to small animals and gives generously to charitable organizations. The quality of his products and workmanship may be as celestial as mere humans could hope to render. The mustache appears to be real and makes him a damn handsome fellow. Thank you on behalf of my lawyers.]
