other options for our hypothetical hard rock cafe instead of the over-done crowd.

- i big Freddie Mercury head from "Queen"

- a huge replica of the big hard rock found in this area, and used as a door stop that ended up being the largest gold nugget found in north america.

I agree Charlotte doesnt need a hard rock. Its too touristy. I would much prefer a homegrown restaurant with some local flair over another chain.

but if we don't have "touristy" stuff here, then we can't have people wearing "Hard Rock Cafe: Charlotte" t-shirts advertising our great city.

I have not seen a Hard Rock T-shirt on someone in a long time. Think about when the last time you saw one was. They really do seem like a brand that is dying in that regard. However, their resort and casino presence seems to be growing. They are probably trying to move in that direction, I doubt most of the US major city cafes even generate that much revenue for them. The touristy city ones (like Myrtle Beach) probably do though, that is just my guess. I don

"touristy" is very different from "tourism". Tourism is good, it brings revenues and improves the reputation of the city. (venice has primarily been a tourist economy for half a millenium).

the problem comes when "touristy" developments become your only draw for tourism, rather than authentic historical or other draws. Orlando and Vegas are are examples of cities built for tourism's sake... and it has been very good for those cities, but it is a very different type of thing than tourists to New York or San Francisco or Paris that go to visit the successes of the city's design, atmosphere, culture, etc.

I'd say the people who put down "touristy" businesses want Charlotte to build a city worth visiting for the city's sake, not simply because we've built some projects that pander to tourists.

This is the second Fox Sports Grill. The first one went out of business. I guess they will try again.

What we had at Concord Mill was a Fox Sky Box Bar & Grill, which is their low-end run-of-the-mill bar food chain that they have at every restaurant.

The Fox Sports Grill is definetly more upscale concept.......Think steakhouse, with somewhat mod decour, and TV's.

As far as HRC....aren't most of them franchises now? HRC could care less how much a Charlotte restaurant makes, because the franchise fees are adding to their bottom line.....also, it's free advertisement for their resorts.

Some of you guys act like tourism is a bad thing for Charlotte........Charlotte needs as much tourism as possible......I think it's one of the most underated cities in America, and we need as much retail/restaurants to boost our city

tourism is great. i think most everyone here supports the new white water park, and even the drive for nascar HOF (even though some of us loathe the sport). however, an outdated, theme-based, glorified mcdonalds that every other city has - doesn't boost tourism. all it does is give a lazy option to people with watered down expectations. IMO.

A lot of people already consider Uptown "theme-park like". I wouldn't want that image to get out of hand. If we want to be taken seriously by visitors and new residents then we need to continue evolving in a serious manner with quality attractions and architecture. Coyote Ugly is Uptown but other than adding another bar it didn't really do much to make Uptown anymore exciting than it already was. Lucky Strike will be another thing but still it isn't THAT huge of a deal. I would like an HRC simply for the petty and vain sake that everyone else has one, even cities we outshine have them. However, if Charlotte never gets one it won't matter that much in the long run. Uptown and the city will be the same with or without HRC. I think the Wachovia projects will do 20 times more to bolster tourism downtown than any cheesy restaurant would. The other cultural attractions that exist uptown and quality neighborhoods like fourth ward are what are bringing tourists in to uptown. Uptown has a ton of bars and restaurants, and that number continues to climb. Retail will be a huge boost eventually. So I say, focus on increasing culture and retail, make sure the place is insanely safe, let the bar scene continue to grow as it has over the last 10 or so years. And let HRC come or not, big deal. If they do come however, I think they should come in as a normal downtown style restaurant. One like they have in Atlanta and other cities and not as some styro/stucco cheestastic extravaganza experience. I would much rather see HRC in an older structure. The Trelor House (if that's it's name) could be renovated into a great HRC, it's right in the nightlife district and a block down from the arena, it's on the trolly/lightrail line, and linked to the convention center by the trolly. A huge styrofoam castle built to "Rock the Queen City" or something similar would be... but they could use the Queen City theme, just tastefully.
