Roanoke Stores and Retail

Roanoke is considered the center for an area of around 1 million that use the cities specialty services. Things like medical specialists, attorneys, the airport, etc. draws people from all over SW Va and southern West Va so every now and then you will see the stat of 600,000 to 1 million thrown out there for marketing purposes. As for the actual metro area it will be a long, long time before we hit even half a million unless they combine neighboring metro areas into one large area.

One reason I think Starbucks hasn't come here sooner is that with the presence of Mill Mt Coffee and Tea they weren't really needed. I'm sure their store location team has had us in the crosshairs for awhile and were just waiting for the numbers to fall into place.

It's hard to stake out a corner in town where Mill Mountain Coffee isn't already. ;)

The Roanoke Ukrop's will come in at around 60,000sf... It will have a considerably more upscale feel (decor, environs, fixtures etc) than the Richmond area Ukrop's (and they are already much more upscale than every other area grocery store). It will also offer everything that the newest, top of the line Richmond stores offer.

First Market Bank will also have a location inside the store. Ukrop's pharmacy won't open for 5 years at the location, due to agreements with nearby tenants.

This store sounds cooler and cooler every time I hear new info about it. :)

There's goiung to be a Walgreens adjacent, so not having a pharmacy immediately makes sense in a way.

Here's the developer's website. It's going to be a much nicer looking project than I had Imagined. http://www.ivymarket.com/ I was thinking it would look more like Townside Festival. Personally I wouldn't park in the underground lot any time they are calling for heavy thunderstorms though. I'm sure they are taking that into account but that area floods very fast and very easy. I know they are putting the creek into a covered culvert but there's still a lot of water that will come from upstream that has to go somewhere.

They got flooded 2 or 3 times this past spring/summer. I avoid the whole stretch of Franklin Rd from the area past El Rodeo restaraunt all the way to the river during heavy thunderstorms. Nearly got washed away myself a few years ago driving home from work one night.
That's awful. I used to work on Albemarle Avenue, and we got flooded a couple of times, though not as bad as the produce place down the street.

yeah I forgot to mention the parking deck. Didn't know there would be escalators that could handle shopping carts too! Since this store will feel much more upscale than the Richmond stores (which are already pretty nice), I wonder if that's their plan for expansion outside of central va. Perhaps they will try to align themselves similar to Wegmans (though with a smaller square footage?). I know the Wegman's and Ukrop's are friends...

also, I've heard that it won't open until October-November...

I've also heard that the store will have a larger and more centralized area for pick up of COC items.

mmmmmmmm so many good choices.

Ukrop's Carryout Catering...

oh and by the way! I remember you guys mentioning that there isn't a starbucks in Roanoke yet... I'd almost guarantee there will be one in the Cafe at this store....with free wi-fi access :)

A freestanding Starbucks opened at Valley View Mall a month or 2 ago. Hasn't been long anyway. I haven't even seen it yet but I'm not a big coffee drinker and I avoid the mall area from November until after the holidays.

Oh yeah, what type of store hours does Ukrops usually have? I know they are closed Sundays but are they 24 hours otherwise?

Most stores are 6am until 10pm, with some closing at 11.

It was very strange moving from Roanoke & Blacksburg, where seemingly all the grocery stores are 24hrs, to Richmond, where none are, unless you count Wal-Mart as a grocery store.

The new Starbucks is pretty nice, though fairly typical.

So the Kroger stores aren't open 24 hours in Richmond? All but a handful in Southwest Virginia are.

I'm not aware of any that are open later than 11 or Midnight. Combine that with Ukrops' even shorter hours and Sunday closing, and we get almost perpetually crowded grocery stores.

Such a waste. A city the size of Richmond should have late night grocery choices broader than 7-Eleven and Wal-Mart. In Roanoke, they (Kroger) leave at least leave one register open as the workers are stocking the store. Nightowls like me are always shopping for groceries latenights.

Same here. I don't get off of work until 11:30pm and I drive right by 2 Kroger's so that's when I do my shopping. I hate going to the store during regular hours. If I have to go then I make sure it's just for something like a deli or bakery item that you can't get at night.

Are there still Safeway's in Richmond? I noticed a few years ago that the one on Grace St was something else. I used to live a block or so up from that one and went there all the time. Then I moved to Carytown and was within walking distance of the Ukrops there. Never set foot in a Safeway again.

No Safeway's in Richmond. We've got Ukrop's, Food Lion, Kroger, and if you count it, Wal-mart. Whole Foods is coming soon I think.

Ironically, I think the former Safeway store on Grace is now a Ukrop's. Was it at Harrison and Grace St? If so, it's now a Ukrop's.

From what I gather, the Ukrop's store in Roanoke will knock the socks off of a store like the Carytown location (which is pretty cool and hip for a grocery store). Maybe Richmonders will envy Roanoke's Ukrop's :)

Also, I have no idea what kind of hours the krop will keep in Roanoke. Might be later than the Richmond stores, but I bet a lot they'll be closed at night at some point. Don't forget sundays too!
