NC gets the lottery

Just posted on the NC forum that the Senate passed the lottery bill this afternoon in a bit if fancy legislative maneuvering.

Isn't this great. A lottery. Another smooth and sneaky way of taxing the lower middle class and most importantly the poor. Well there was much pressure, it had to happen sometime.

I laugh at that comment. I am considered high income and I buy lotto tickets every time I leave the state. I buy for my family members and they make more than I do.

A year after it is implemented, you will either play or not and not even think about. It will be a non-issue. As my sister said about someone who she knew had a serious gambling problem......"A lotto is a joke to a gambler. It does not provide the thrill. They will never waste their time on it" JMHO

Someone who enjoys gambling and understands it would never buy a lotto ticket, your right, b/c it's a sucker's bet. Basically we're going to be taxing all the suckers in our state now, and maybe you're the exception SS but a lot of those people are going to be poor and uneducated. NC has stood on the moral high ground on this issue for a long time and I'm sad to see that change.

It IS a sucker bet. House advantages in the 95% range are not uncommon. Imagine beating 40M:1 odds and getting $2M for it. That's pathetic. No casino is allowed to gouge people in this way, but the good ol' gubment can.

Since gambling is now morally "OK" in this state, why can't free enterprises run FAIR gambling enterprises along I-95. Imagine how well an MGM Grand level casino would do halfway between New York and Miami. Wouldn't it be nice to suck gambling traffic away from Vegas the way they are sucking our furniture market away?

When I lived in MA I played scratch tickets a few times because it seemed like your chances were a little better...I had a friend win $100 through them once....I just played a handful of times and never won I'm just not lucky....

I wouldn't doubt it. Alot of people from the Triangle would go there.
