there isn't enough color to distinguish between sections, you can't see the split in the forum segments like before, its difficult to see what things are actually new...

We're working on this and other issues right now but this is a major overhaul so it is going to take some time to iron out the kinks. Hopefully within the next week we will be fully settled in to our new digs and everyone's concerns will have been addressed. :shades:

I have made a lot of changes in the last couple of days so please clear your browsers cache and refresh the site. The new colors were carried over (without change) from the old skin. No more light shades of blue. Shades are now gray and have more variance (just like the old skin).

The city's plan to spruce up 19th Street between the Convention Center and the Oceanfront is getting a boost from the federal stimulus package. Virginia Beach will use $5 million in bonds, allocated to the city by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, to buy land for sidewalks.

Plans to update 19th Street into a pedestrian-friendly corridor with mass transit had been on hold while the city determines the future of a Convention Center hotel, the former Dome site and light rail.

But since bond money was available, this project seemed like a good use, said Virginia Beach Deputy City Manager Steve Herbert.

And people at the pilot complain about sidewalk construction.......

Coming down Rt. 13 this evening, I was pleasantly shocked to see the skyline of the Oceanfront looking like a mini-Manhattan all lit up, then see the Shore Dr. high rises lit up, then the Westin looking like the Empire State Building from afar, then look over and see downtown Norfolk and the Port of HR. It was one of the most beautiful sights I've seen, epsecially with the water and the sunset. I really, really, love Hampton Roads.

City officials once thought the patchwork of fields between Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach and Fentress Naval Auxiliary Landing Field in Chesapeake would be a perfect location for homes - lots of them. However, the federal government's decision that more homes threatened Oceana forced Virginia Beach to reconsider its plans.

What development best suits the 4,700 acres is still unclear. Early next year, Beach officials will launch a study that is expected to provide some answers.

I would guess that the area would be at most industrial, but I would not mind it being a large greenbelt

This is old, but I don't recall ever seeing it on here:

Sunsations Realty, a Virginia Beach-based development group, has ventured into hotels at the resort and will soon unveil a new Hampton Inn

Hampton Inn at 1101 Atlantic Ave. The 10-story building will have 141 rooms, 20 suites and a restaurant. It was designed by CMSS Architects.

"We're looking forward to the brand name Hampton Inn, and, that it is a new property, will entice business," said Santiago Monzon, who is handling pre-opening functions including reservations. He added that while 19 Atlantic is a seasonal hotel, the Hampton Inn will be open year-round.

VIRGINIA BEACH – Land approved for an upscale housing development five years ago may become the spot of the new Kellam High School. A joint city-schools committee recommended this morning that the School Board buy a 108-acre site at the corner of West Neck and North Landing roads for $8.1 million. The land, known as Manchester Station, is more than triple the size of the current high school property on Holland Road. The property, owned by the Suffolk-based Overton Family Partnership, is assessed at $10.4 million. An appraisal ordered by the school division came in at $3.9 million.

Bah, they should replace Princess Anne High School first, so that we can free up the land for redevelopment.....

Would you guys agree that if Virginia Beach doesn't persue LRT,

Town Center will not grow much bigger than it's current state, and VB will never become urban?

Without LR, VB should stop trying to build a downtown and maybe work on manicuring it's cul-de-sacs and repaving the parking lots in front of the thousands of strip malls?

LRT alone doesn't guarantee success in becoming a more dense and urban city. It is most certainly helpful, but to say a city cannot go forward without it is perhaps naive. There are several alternatives that are viable such as BRT. Building LRT in a city didn't guarantee the success for St. Louis for example.

Virginia Beach has multiple plans for dense, urban developments throughout the city, and they all work around the LRT.
