Look at this video right now! I did not understand the depths of what this man was trying to do for our area until now. He was even flying CEOs in to look at investment opportunities in the area. He i

I can’t for the life of me figure out why he needs to close that [email protected]$n street. I’m usually supportive of his efforts, but he does himself no favor with these antics. It’s a public right of way and should remain such. I have no interest in ceding additional territory to the North Enders. They already think they own half the beach anyway. They’ll live if the great unwashed masses can continue to use a taxpayer funded road.

I attended the joint Centerville/Kempsville Town Hall last night that was held by Councilmembers Wooten and Abbott with an appearance by Mayor Dyer. Dyer came off as very pro business & development but with an emphasis on diversity and equality. Issues that were brought included the Pharrell Williams proposal, the Atlantic Avenue culdesac, the Amazon pitch, Economic Development, transparency, and typical small issue (trash collection/street lights). The festival seemed to have a positive reception amongst the attendees and coucilmembers but it didn’t sound like it was close to happening. Wooten got an earful for voting in favor of the culdesac but she felt that the city had already committed to the project with two previous votes. The release of details of the city’s pitch to Amazon was criticized due to the inclusion of light rail & involvement of Armada Hoffler. Dyer explained that the EDA typically arranges deals prior to seeking Council approval and that light rail was a ‘dead puppy.’  He seemed to anticipate that autonomous vehicles would replace the need for a major mass transportation expansion. Transparency, which was the major issue on his platform, was addressed throughout the meeting. EDA meetings are going to be on Facebook Live, like Council and Planning meetings already are, beginning in February.

The event was held at the Kempsville Rec Center and that place was slammed with people using the facility. There was not a single room that was not in use. As a Chesapeake resident, I was incredibly envious. We can’t have nice things in Chesapeake.

Edit:  Facebook Live Link

Another issue discussed was turning the Norfolk Southern rail line into a multiuse trail and a pedestrian bridge over 264 to connect Mt Trashmore to Town Center. I think the latter should be part of any construction on the Independence interchange.

He's being a bit disingenuous on light rail. It's easy for him to say that it's a dead puppy now because Amazon isn't coming here, but if they had agreed to place their headquarters here, you damn well better believe they would have considered it.

John Atkinson is retiring just one year into his latest term.

https://pilotonline.com/news/government/local/article_89b0b104-ff12-11e8-95bc-078bc590ae10.html

I was going to be nice and take the high road and then saw this quote.

"The council members thought they had it done and I really threw a monkey wrench in their operation," Atkinson said.

Good riddance to this dude. He is single-handedly responsible for keeping this area behind the times when it comes to light rail. I'll keep the rest to myself with this being a family forum.

These surveys  make my head spin. Now, supposedly, our area ranks very high among areas that millennial‘s are moving too. That includes Chesapeake, that rates second in the nation. Not complaining, but I swear I just saw a survey that stated the exact opposite.

This is from a couple months ago, but the Virginia Beach City FC soccer team moved up from semi-pro to a professional level in the NPSL. The articles kinda confuse me in terms of what this entails, but it is good to see soccer taking off here.

Essentially, they're just paying their players who aren't in college.  In the past, they 'signed' pro players, but didn't pay them.  Lower division soccer in the USA is complicated. It's a mix of amateur clubs, pro clubs, and minor-league feeder teams  to MLS clubs.

Looks like the "Something in the Water" festival is closer to becoming a thing, April 24-26. This is great news, and gives VB a chance to really shine as a vacation destination for young adults. IMO, entertainment options for people from say, 18-40 is really lacking.

Thanks for linking to 13 news. The comments section on the pilot article on this is just cancerous. I’m really hoping all goes well if for no other reason than to shut the naysayers up.

That is awesome, I still remembering seeing Missy Elliott preform as a high school teenager at a battle of the bands show that a friend's band played in.

Unfortunately, tonight's 13News article had some NIMBYs at the meeting. "I really would like to remind you that it's not the function of this body to provide entertainment for people or to throw them parties. There are better uses for this money," commented a man at the meeting. The money came from the tourism fund...I'm pretty sure providing entertainment and throwing parties is literally why a tourism fund exists.

They didn't name names, but assuming they're living close to where all this will happen, I'd like to know what these people expected when they decided to move to a beachfront community.
