What is your cities largest employer? Is it a private company or is it have to do with the state, local or national goverment? Does this employer contribute to the city? Where are there headquarter? Are they smack dab in the middle of your downtown or in an area that resembles a suburb?

In the Providence metro, CVS is number one, then Fleet Boston, then MetLife, Inc., then American Power Conversion. I wanna say that the actual largest employer in the area is actually the State of Rhode Island though, I'll have to find out for sure.

All except for FleetBoston are out in suburbs, though. GTECH, the 11th largest, is moving downtown, and most of the State offices are located in the city proper as well.

My homes: (numbers are estimates off the top of my head)

Orlando - Walt Disney World (57,000 employees). Nowhere near downtown.

Miami - either U-Miami (~10,000 employees) or American Airlines (the largest public employer in the area is Miami-Dade schools). Neither has primary operations in downtown, but UM-Jackson Medical Campus is on the edge of dt.

Augusta - Savannah River Site (~13,000 employees). Nowhere near downtown. Not even in the same state. SRS is in Aiken Co, SC.

The largest employer in Freehold (overall) would be the Monmouth County Complex, which is comprised of the Hall of Records, Monmouth County Courthouse, Sheriff's Office, and Government Offices, which when all is said and done takes up about 4-5 square blocks of space in the center of downtown.

The largest "non-governmental" employer is the Centra-State Medical Center, the largest hospital in the area. It's located about 2 miles outside of downtown.

The largest "corporation" employer is Nestle, who operates the world's largest tea factory about 1 mile outside of downtown. Bank of America, Verizon, Asbury Park Press, and Gannet Media also have a large presence in Freehold.

In Pittsburgh, I believe it is the University of Pittsburgh and/or the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers. They're sort of spread out around the city.

In Tucson, it's my employer: the University of Arizona.

About 14,000 full- and part-time faculty and staff (including student workers) as of Fall '05.

Raytheon and the Air Force are second and third I believe.

The largest employer in the city of Detroit is Detroit Public Schools, with 23,000 employees. The second largest employer is the city of Detroit, with 18,000 employees. In fact, there are only two private sector employers in the top ten: Daimler Chrysler AG's Chrysler Group (10,000 employees) and General Motors (6000 employees).

Wow, I had no idea that GM's manufacturing base was that low in Detroit. Luckily, they have almost all of the white-collar GM jobs, but I still can't believe Lansing has a few more GM employees than Detroit.

Up here in CT BRAC voted to keep the Groton/New London Sub Base open which saved 8500 direct jobs and according to the state if the base had closed 31,000 jobs could have been lost because the navy is big and one of the largest employers in southeastern CT and the largest in New London and Groton. Also next to the sub base is electric boat which said if the base closed they might have to go to and take more then 1500 jobs with them but fortunatly the base was taken off the list..this time at least

BRAC's decision was to give the city until March 06 to buy out all property in the areas around the base but it will cost the city (can you say taxpayers?!!) over $300 million dollars. Honestly, I could never seen this happening. But the base may just be realigned meaning most of the jobs could be moved away but some positions may remain. The base provides 15,000 jobs to military and civilans and would leave a one billion dollar hole in the economy.

For Minneapolis, larges employer is probably Target as their headquarters are located right downtown. They built their own building 4 years ago and have already ourgrown it. They are leasing space in 2 other buildings for now to accomodate all thei employees.

That doesnt include any government jobs.

The minnesota state government has 56,000; the US government has 35,000; and the University of Minnesota has 31,000. This just minneapolis though There are alot of other large employers in the twin cities metro like Best Buy and State Farm ect.
