In Columbia, the state of South Carolina is the largest employer with over 30,000 employees.

Here are some numbers for other employers in the greater Columbia area. Those figures quoting 14,000 employees at the University of Arizona and 31,000 at the University of Minnesota sound high. My brother is a professor at the U of A, I will verify that figure soon.

In Memphis, FedEx employs about 30,000.

About half of those are part-time working at the sorting-hub--pays about $12/hr per shift with a guarantee of 6 hr/night with some benefits. Mostly college students and 2nd jobbers.

The rest are corporate, pilots, or work at FedEx's tech center, where they earn the real dough.

Nashville's largest is Vanderbilt University and Medical Center, with about 16,000 employees.

Franklin, it would be the Cool Springs Galleria, which employees 3,500 people. However, that is comprised of many employers, but listed as one. The largest single employer is Primus Financial, with 2,400 people.

In my region of NWTN-

Union City, TN - Goodyear Tire - roughly at 2500 (down from a high of 3500), followed by Tyson Chicken at 1500-1600 (?), and Kohler (bathtubs/showers) at 540, and Lennox (Fireplace units) at 500.

Martin, TN - MTD (Lawnmowers, makes a lot of the brands on the market) at 900, IFCO Systems at 325, and Gordon Foods at 230 (facility set to close in 06).The University of Tennessee at Martin at ? -hundreds, likely significantly bigger than IFCO- has the largest economic impact on the city.

*Alot of this data is a mix between what TDECD data sheets from 2002 state as employment figures and major employers, and my best current knowledge of the regions employment standings, ie layoffs or expansions at these plants.

^ I don't know, I looked for numbers but could not find any and it was not listed of the 2002 TDECD sheets, so I can't tell where it falls in ranking. I would definately say its significantly bigger than IFCO, but is it more than 900 or so at MTD, well I can't really say. There are hundreds of full-time employees, but there are also alot of graduate assistants and student workers which I didn't figure into my estimate since they are also students, so as far as full-time employees go I'm just not sure how many there are. There are roughly 6000 students to give you an idea of how big the University is. So 1000 full-time non-student employees vs. 6000 students would be a 1 to 6 ratio, that seems rather high to me, but it may well be that high.

I will look into it further after Christmas.

Wal-Mart Stores in Bentonville, Arkansas employs around 15,000 to 20,000 employees as well as thousand of vendor employees in the area.

It's so typical of Wal-Mart to headquarter a company in a small town in a low-rise building. I'll bet there's plenty of parking though.

In Durham, Duke University & Medical Center employs over 27,000. IBM and GlaxoSmithKline take 2nd and 3rd with 13,300 and 4,800, respectively.

Parking is actually a bit harder to find these days. They have several lots, but they really need to build a parking garage. In fact, the Home office really needs to be developed into either a High Rise or A big Mid Rise Office Park kind of deal.
